Forgotten? For me, as an American, if you ask me to free-associate "African colonial war," "Mau Mau rebellion" is probably my first answer.

Piggies and colonial atrocities - so many in the world to remember... who as an American remembers the war crimes committed in the Philippines? |

Again, it was part of a unit in my tenth grade American History class, as were the CIA-sponsored coups in the Cold War. The Indian massacres and deportations were part of my elementary school and middle school history classes, as were the Mexican-American war and slavery.
I assume the less glorious parts of Russian history were likewise taught in the Soviet Union?

An old Soviet joke:
American: The great thing about life in a democracy is that we're allowed to criticize our government.
Russian: Yeah, so what? In the Soviet Union, we're allowed to criticize your government too.

Best black political humour going. Nothing like it in the US. Unless you include electing Dubya not once, but twice |

Dear Johnslat
Thank you, but I am already familiar with this site. Have even seen the film. But still, no real comparison, I think. Just doesn't have the same biting humour. Or even just humour, hee hee.
Regards

Dear Sasha,
Humor (like beauty) may be in the eye of the beholder. But you're right; there is no humour there - just humor.
Regards,

Humour is the eye of the beholder? Sounds very close to being guilty of mixed metaphors. Is there a name for that crime?
Hic! |

A newspaper which does a breathtaking job covering the state of things in the Caucasus, and that's saying nothing of the issue of the unnaturally short life expectancies enjoyed by many of Putin's critics.

Tsk tsk! Such prejudice against a democratically elected world leader. Slander even, perhaps? |
