Hello. My friend is interested in working on an oil rig teaching English. Has anyone worked on one before and could give some feedback. Also where can he find openings and what is required to get such a job? My friend's qualifications are:


Bachelors and Master's in Engineering.
4 years teaching at the University level and 2 years teaching English aboard


Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I've worked with the oil and gas industry, but have never heard on English being taught on a rig.

I was told by one of my CELTA instructors that it was possible and really good pay. I was told that you work on the rig since they get limited time off onshore. Is this right or wrong?

So far as I know, wrong, but I can't claim to know the whole world of oil rigs. There is really limited room on a rig (ever visited one?) and not much space for anything that's non-essential. English language teacher would probably fit into the non-essential category in most cases Shocked , though I guess there could be some exception somewhere.
In my experience, there are actual classrooms on land for oil rig workers.

I'd say that it is wrong, but then misinformation about teaching in the Middle East is rampant. We've had many teachers on here over the years who have taught or are teaching in the oil industry, but the classrooms seem to be on land.

I suggest that your friend get on The Google and find the names of the various companies around the Gulf... like ARAMCO (in Saudi) and ADNOC (in the UAE) etc. Check out their websites for hiring. We have one member here who teaches in the oil industry in Libya. (see the Libya thread on this branch)

The Gulf (Persian or Arab depending) has oil rigs. English is NOT taught there but is taught at training centres onshore.

A moral of this tale could be, "Do not listen to your CELTA trainer."

There are very few jobs on rigs but they do exist.

There are some jobs in offshore locations like Das Island (Abu Dhabi) and Halool (Qatar).

There are many jobs upstream in field locations, especially in Libya. These are always rotations and starting salaries are around the $65,000 mark with free food, housing, flights and worldwide med insurance.
