We have a new contender for one of the lowest salaries!!

JUC (or UCJ) - are now offering-----wait for it........7400 SAR to native (yes--native!!) experienced English teachers. Hold on, this isn't true...I forgot to add on the 900 transport allowance (which, will just about cover transport in Jubail!)--TOTAL=8,300SAR

This information is factual. I should know, I was offered it!

During your time at JUC, don't forget to add on:
500 for your Iquama (they keep your passport-like a slave);

Thank you for the update-trustme. Apparently, JUC are attempting to hire highly experienced native teachers. Prospective applicants SHOULD be aware that:

1. There is a complex management structure (which means lengthy delays in any kind of administrative process);

2. The basic salary current offered including the transport allowance (of 900SAR) is a head-spinning, meagre, and laughable 8400SAR!!

3. Now, they are only interested in recruiting applicants who are single. Why? Because RC (allegedly) do not have any family quarters available. Of course, this is not the truth. In fact, the governor of RC recently signed a housing contract in excess of 570 million Saudi Riyals; there is a new housing complex ready at Jamuldah district. However, these units have already been allocated (to whom you may ask? Precisely);

4. Recently, it has been decided (by RC) that school fees for dependent children will be reduced. You SHOULD bear this in mind if the contract you are offered is a family status contract!

5. The overtime rate is a measly 60SAR per hour. Quite possibly (and to the shame of RC), the lowest in the kingdom! This is particularly pertinent as there is a lot of "forced" overtime. The reason for this is because there are simply not enough teachers.

RC, means-Royal Commission-the federal style government responsible for ALL administrative matters at UCJ and in fact, in Jubail.The Saudis are stationed in an imposing building which, actually looks like a Saudi railway station!). The level of bureaucratic stupidity is beyond belief. They have no concept of the word 'competency". Try it for yourself!80% of teachers in the English Department have indicated that they will be leaving next year--so, the future for JUC is not rosy.

Very Happy Hehe, looks more like a maximum-security jail to me.

They wouldn't even know what competency is. They do understand the word 'work' but have absolutely no intention of doing any.

If you want to teach english at JUC, or JIC or JTI for that matter, why not just apply through McGill and make twice that? Wink Wink

Good point truthbebold.....Anyone seeking a position at JUC/JIC/JTI would be better off working for McGill. You would get paid twice as much and get treated well. There is obviously (a possible) back-"hander" arrangement going on with the those in charge and McGill?

Point of fact--JUC are so desperate for teachers now they will take ABSOLUTELY ANYONE, so anyone with a mental problem who needs to escape their own country for whatever reason would be welcome to apply!

There have been numerous interviews and offers made at JUC,but nobody has arrived yet (so I am reliably informed). Mind you, the salary now being offered is just over 8000SAR (yes 8000!! what an insult!)-it's not surprising then!

8000 is outrageous and JUC is notoriously bad news to work at - spoilt brats ruling the roost/classroom. I'm sure you need an MA too, which makes the salary even worse. I've got BA and a certificate and earn more than double that salary.

Mind you, McGill has a LOT of runners also due to delinquent students and shared housing. Give it a while and their salaries will plummet too.

Costs are being cut at every turn, it appears.

7400 SR is what the RC pays to Grade 10, Step 1 employees. Grade 10 means a BA holder. (An MA holder would be Grade 11). Step 1 means that you have very little teaching experience (2 years or less). If you accept this offer, your step would increase every year by one. Providing that your yearly evaluation is fine, this means that you will receive an annual increment of about 450 SR. However, sometimes MA holders are also given this salary for 2 reasons.

1-) They don't have 2 years post-MA experience, so their MA is not recognised. And once you sign your contract, your status never changes. So even if you stay with the RC for another 5 years, you would remain in Grade 10 status (BA-holder).

2-) You may actually qualify for Grade 11 (in which case your title would be 'lecturer' rather than 'instructor', and you would teach up to 18 hours a week), but because the RC hires certain number of people for each grade every year due to budgetary concerns, it may be the case that they have filled their vacancies for Grade 11, and as a result they have no option but to consider you for Grade 10. Again, once you sign your contract, your status never changes.

Whatever their justification (RC), salaries being offered are simply just too low. Even non-native teachers are realizing this!

Also, having a multitude of pay scales is indicative of their (RC) desire for bureaucracy.

We all know that there are many different ways to qualify as an ESL teacher. Experience in the classroom, patience, cultural compatability, maturity, and teaching ability are just some examples of areas that should also be considered more for the purpose of calculating salaries.

How many lecturer positions are offered now, regardless of MA's, PhDs etc? Zero. Because RC would rather employ someone who will teach for 20 hours instead of 18 (as a lecturer) or 16 (as an assistant professor).

THERE IS NO JUSTIFICATION FOR THE LOW SALARIES. I HAVE ALSO HEARD FROM 4 RECENTLY RECRUITED TEACHERS AT JUC THAT THEY DO NOT RECEIVE THE INFLATION ALLOWANCE-DESPITE IT BEING OFFERED TO THEM ORIGINALLY. One teacher in particular, received it for1 month. When he enquired why he didn't receive further payments, he was told--"oh, sorry. RC made a mistake. You were paid the month they withdrew it".

That is what teachers were making back in 1987.
