I was wondering if there are places (or even specific companies) that are not too difficult to find that have a lower price for the key money and deposit cost. Maybe even doing away with the key money altogether. |

Do you have mini mini in the Kansai area? If so, ask for the スーパー君 rooms with 礼金0 and 敷金0. You'll see these rooms advertised on their website in green with the above characters. Link: http://minimini.jp/
Here's an example of what kidn of rooms you can find on their site: Apartment: Room in Chuo-ku, Tokyo |

Any place can show you them - the only thing is that those places are generally less desirable places. |

Please give us a range of what you mean by "lower price", and tell us what area of the country you are talking about. LeoPalace doesn't ask for a deposit, as far as I recall (but I believe there is a cleaning service charge for when you leave). |

I am not currently in Japan, but thanks!

I figured. It seems to be the same everywhere.

Well, from what I understand, key money is usually equal to multiple months rent so by "lower price" I would say equal to one month's rent or less. And in the Keihanshin metro. I should have been more specific in my OP. |

Go to Google, search in Japanese for your city and "アパート. You will get a long list of sites, some of them agencies and some of them collections of properties from different agencies. You should be able to search for apartments under a whole range of conditions, including price range and whether or not it has key money (礼金: なし). Here are a few for you to start with:
http://www.homes.co.jp/chintai/
http://suumo.jp/chintai/kanto/
http://www.chintai.net/top/index.do
This type of question gets asked enough times it might be worth putting a sticky with some links in it. |

Thank you!
I haven't seen this question before, but I wouldn't doubt it. I actually think that this site has a really good FAQ section. |

Just to let everyone know: A lot of real estate agents in Japan lie on websites. If they have it in their window that means it's actually for rent but a lot of the online ads are simply fake or contain large omissions. |

Could you give me an example? |

"This flat is cheap because no murderers ever lived here."
Seriously, it's an estate agent's job to lie; it's a given that they shouldn't be trusted. Isn't it? |

My Leo Palace total move in cost was about 200000 yen. Less than my current place which was 350000.

Places will either list nonexistent apartments or omit things, such as the required key money. One easy way to tell is to look at the ads online. Every site has some keywords you can search for, such as no key money, pets allowed, no guarantor, &c. If an ad has all of them selected, I simply just skip it as it's almost certainly a fake ad. |
