Two rather basic questions here:

1. I have my supposedly 12-month visa and it says

"Date of issue: 09 Jan 2013 Date of expiry: 09 Apr 2013"
"For stay of: one year"

I'm fairly certain that means I have until 9th April to get it stamped in Japan. Then the 12-month period starts from that moment, right? Just a bit disconcerting there is no actual reference to 2014 on the visa.

2. I know this is linked-to in a sticky, which then points in the direction of some chunky PDFs on the subject, but please tell me simply: When and where am I expected to get my alien resident card?

Domo arigato, Mr Roboto.

1. yes, that is right.

2. the ward office nearest your apartment. Your employer should be able to point that out. Go as soon as possible upon arrival. You may need it to set up a bank account.

Cool, thanks. Just double checking I didn't receive a 3-month visa!

IIRC it's a bit different now - you get the card when you enter Japan but you then have to visit the ward office to actually register there.
