Saw a press conference with a sprinkiling of MEPs talking about Energy Policy in the EU. MEPs talking eloquently in French, and English on this technical and important field. Polish politicians out in strength talking to Europe and the World - in Polish !!

Why do Poles have such problems with foreign languages ? Even BRITISH politicians have more fluency in foreign languages !

The politicians, the old ones who run things...are hopeless. The people making the decisions here are still just old boy commies. Also I don't think that anyone in charge really gives a sh#% about their job or their country. No sense of duty to your fellow man, thus the unwillingness to invest any time in learning.

I do not think you can just blame Boleslaw Bierut and Wladyslaw Gomulka. The Polish MEPs I saw were in their 30s and 40s.

Look at similar characters from anywhere else in eastern Europe and they will speak at LEAST one foreign language. Poland is sui generis.

Count your blessings;-)

I wish that (former) Czech president Vaclav Klaus couldn't speak English (or any other known language, for that matter).

I just cannot get it. What is going on inside the heads of these people ? Do they imagine the rest of the world speaks Polish, or will learn it ?

Well, I mean Warsaw IS building it's SECOND metro line. Come on now, I think it's pretty obvious which city should be called THE capital of Europe. Smile

oh? you'd prefer a 'leader' like GW who couldn't speak English (or any other known language, for that matter)?

No, actually I would just have liked to shut that particular one up. He was ALMOST as embarassing as the shrubbery that sat in the White House for a far-too-long while.

Love the Bushisms from afar, though, now that it's all over:-)
