Hello everyone, I'm a newbie and first-time poster from the US. I've been researching teaching English abroad, as it seems like a great way to get to know myself and a bit of the world! I've read many of the posts in a lot of the forums here (what a great resource, btw), and have a few questions.
I'd like to work in Europe most likely (I know, good luck!), and wasn't sure if they're really picky in most countries about having a CELTA vs. just a TEFL certificate. Can it really help that much? I'd love to work in Portugal (even though I know the opportunities and pay aren't great) or possibly Turkey. Does a CELTA really help you get your foot in the door in both of those? Or does Turkey's not-yet-EU status affect what qualifications you need? I'm debating whether I should fork out the extra money needed to take a CELTA course at the location in which I wish to work in order to possibly make connections during that time for later job opportunities, or just do it in England or the States for less. Or possibly even just taking a TEFL here and not worrying about CELTA at all, if not necessary.
Well, this has become a rambling post, but I thought I'd check in here first to see if anyone has recommendations for those areas in particular, or alternate locations I might look into that are similar in climate (I'd really love to be near the ocean, as I feel most at home in those places). I realize I can't have everything, but narrowing down my options and focusing my research on certain things might help out a lot. Thanks so much in advance! |

A CELTA is technically a TEFL, as TEFL is a broad umbrella term to cover a wide variety of certificates. Generally though, CELTA is at the top of the market and worth getting. Especially for Europe, it is well-recognized.
There are all kinds of other TEFL certificates out there, kind of like many soft drinks on the market. CELTA is like Coca-Cola if you will, and most people recognize it.

Thanks! I appreciate the help. I was pretty much decided about getting a CELTA, and I think this gives me a little more impetus to go ahead and get it! |

I'll second what Steve said. Get the CELTA, it's the most recognized, is very good and you won't regret it. It opened a lot of doors for me and gave me a good base of knowledge to teach from. If you're going to teach in Europe, the CELTA would be even more helpful as it is more well known there. |
