JohnPartee and Dirt Guy both gave you good advice. I will offer you mine as well... Find a better place to work than china. I have been here almost 4 years and looking back I should have left after year 1 and before I knocked up my soon-to-be wife. If you are single and not worried about money, China is fun but gets old quick.

Besides there are many other countries who pay MUCH better than China without all the worry about being ripped off. See this link and you'll see what I mean... www.ChinaScamBusters.com

If you do come to China keep in touch with this forum because there are a lot of veterans here who always have good advice when you run into "unusual problems". But also keep in mind that the visa laws change here roughly every 6 months with no advance notice.

Not sure exactly where you came from but when a new member comes on this forum trying to discredit esl in China and making attempts to pump up some website in every post (which is what you've done), I get suspicious.

First, blox is 22, has a BA and no experience. He isn't going to get a job teaching ESL in most of those other countries that pay more than China. China's fine for a lot of people, but not for everyone.

Second, I checked out chinascambusters and it looks like it's connected to another website someone else has been trying to promote on here recently, the china foreign teachers union website. They both post links to some of the same articles and both have the same agenda and amateurish appearance so it's clear they're both products of the same disgruntled individual.

First you need to ignore any and all comments about teacher wages and earnings that are posted by china-tesol.com, abroad.com, eslcafe.com and any other forum or website that makes money doing teacher placements and/or selling resumes.

This is from chinascambusters. Is this supposed to mean people should ignore all comments made by posters on internet forums? If so it's an idiotic statement. My advice to anyone new to ESL is to use this site, eslcafe.com, to post your queries and disregard websites that are so clearly biased against teaching in any particular place (like chinascambusters). eslcafe has been around a long time and has a pretty decent reputation and well-established membership that will do far more for a newbie than any other site.

Yes, that's what I try to tell all the new teachers. I've seen some of them get down in the mouth more quickly than others, but the gestation period is about nine months max.

Firstly, get a proper teaching qualification such as a Trinity Cert or CELTA. Gradually, begin to specialise, EAP, for example. Become an IELTS Examiner. This way you will enjoy a standard of living far higher than the UK or US.
