I've been in ESL since 1995, have CertTESOL, BA with minor in English and an MS Ed in Online Curriculum Design. I am currently teaching in Saudi.

I am starting a blended learning program in Visual Rehab Therapy and am interested in teaching visually disabled students for experience. Where the hell do you even start to look for jobs in that area in the ME? Can anyone point me in the right direction?

9. To your knowledge are there any concessions or incentives or programs for those who are visually impaired or handicapped to start their own businesses? If so, please explain. If not, do you think there should be any initiatives on the part of the Government to provide such opportunities to those who are visually impaired or otherwise handicapped?

Personally, Ive never heard of any incentives or programs for those with visual disabilities and truly dont know where to look if there are or not as very little is published in this regard in the media. For sure there has to be such means to help those with any form of disability to integrate in there societies and be independent and productive. Governments usually play a major role in founding such programs but the private non profit organizations have a bigger responsibility to fund, develop and market such programs. In developed countries, people with disabilities have some privileges. Such as free public transportation, even private airline companies offer special discounts on air tickets. Their purchases of I.T products such as computers and other aids are tax free and many more.

I hope to see similar opportunities to those with disabilities in the Kingdom and have to remember that there is always a beginning for everything.

Not much help...interesting career path though

KSA is a dinosaur when it comes to technology for learning. I suspect you'd have a better chance in Qatar or the Emirates. Check out higheredjobs.com and chronicle.com for a variety of international TEFL and non-TEFL job opportunities.

Also, seriously consider going to next month's TESOL Arabia conference and job fair with the purpose of 1) attending presentations related to technology for learning, 2) applying/interviewing for positions, and 3) networking. (If you'd posted this thread a few months back, I would have suggested you present this focus area at the conference, which would have given you the type of high visibility you need.) You'll have to visit TESOL Arabia's conference webpage for specifics on dates, registration, job fair, etc.

And if you attend, plan to take plenty of networking (AKA introduction) cards to pass out. This is your personal card and not a business card from Wasta University showing you're an EFL Instructor. Your networking card should have your name, relevant education, and your email address on one side. (Don't use a funky email address like "[email protected]"; use something more professional such as yourname@... Also, don't include your printed phone number on the card; it's not as static as an email address.) On the other side, indicate your TEFL experience, skills, and interest area as a bulleted list---you only need about 5-6 points. Just keep each line short and with the info you feel is your strongest. The cards should be professionally printed on quality card stock. Anyway, once you're at the conference, start networking like crazy and telling those you meet about your interests. You'll find other attendees are very receptive about taking your card and will hand out theirs as well---after all, they're networking too. You might even get introduced to someone who is already working in that field. For follow up, use your LinkedIn account to connect with these new contacts no later than two weeks upon meeting them. Good luck.
