I've been teaching English in Indonesia for the past five years, and have been considering a change and teaching in China.

I've applied for a few jobs, and those that have replied have tried to hurry me into signing a contract, which I'm not going to do in a rush.

However, in each case, I've asked for the email address of a current or recently left teacher, to ask all the obvious questions, and the interest suddenly withers.

I'm going to try the job sites listed by other members of this forum, but would appreciate any comments. Please e-mail me directly if you wish: [email protected]

Although I'm 65, I feel that I still have a few years of English teaching left in me, preferably to older students. Any ideas?

Adrian

Adrian

I have been at this School 3 hours Northwest of Shanghai for amost a year now and I am going to sign up for a second year. I am now 57.

I do not think you can ready anything into the fact that they will not give you an email address of a current or previous teacher as I have offered my email address to my School as I would willingly recommend teaching here to anyone applying.

There are so many jobs constantly available that you really have to just do your homework and decided what area you wish to live in and then narrow it down to a few Schools and weigh up the pros and cons of each School. There is no simple answer, I don't think because three teachers have done a "midnight run" from my School earlier this year and I simply love it here and cannot fault the School at all. Basically what I am saying is that even if you receive glowing references from other current or previous teachers, you still may hate the School when you arrive.

I think you have to do some research and then take pot luck basically.
Of you initially only sign a 6 month contract, you can always move on to another school if you are not particularly happy.

'Rhonda Place', I am a tad confused here to say the very least! Surely that is exactly why the poster SHOULD indeed read something into their not being willing and/or able to supply the email address of a current or previous teacher!

What would be the use of him talking to the three previous teachers from here who did a "runner". They obviously did not like it here whereas I LOVE it.

All I am saying is that everyone has different expectations etc. The three teachers who left here and broke their contracts would give him their opinion of my School and I and another teacher who has been here for 9 months, would give him a completely different view.

Therefore, in my humble opinion, contacting present or past teachers will not guarantee you of anything.
