When I saw the poster's user name, I shuddered.
It's not a stereotype, it's a fact.
In the U.S., Skinhead = Nazi.
It's that simple.

Here in Australia, 'skinhead' was just a jibe directed at people who had just gotten a really short haircut - much like calling them 'baldy', or 'chrome dome'.
Calling someone a skinhead is quite different. Mostly the skinhead subculture is just a fashion statement, like being a punk or a goth, or in my father's generation, a rocker or a bodgie. Our white supremacists are mostly common or garden variety rednecks, which from what I gather is much like the situation in the US. Skinheads are really quite charming in comparison. They're just more visible than the ordinary looking rednecks.
Speaking of rednecks, what's a 'wifebeater'? Is it a check (plaid) shirt or something? |

Dear justcolleen,
Ah, but you see, I'm engaged in my never-ending battle against stereotypes and generalizations, which have featured so heavily on the "In Defense of America" thread.
Even "skinheads" can't be neatly tucked away in their own little box, as the "SkinHeads Against Racial Prejudice" (SHARP) may help to demonstrate.
Regards,
John |

Hi colleen. (Are you really as 'just' as you say you are...?) And Atlas. Quite a welcome. You've nothing to fear from me. I'm not a right wing goosestepper. I'm not even American (... . The first time I got my hair cut milimetre short, my brother's friend called me "skinhead" coz I looked like the people you're referring to. As Aramas points out, it's really a short hair deal. A nickname. Nothing political about it at all. If you don't believe me, check out my signature author's website. Search Peter Garrett on an Aussie search engine and you'll discover how anti-nazi I am. I'm sorry to have taken away from the original thread. It wasn't my fault. I just wanted to be friends. Can't we be friends?

I've heard of racist. I've heard of sexist. Anyone heard of 'baldist'?
Again, not my fault I'm an eggshell blonde. Believe me John, I woke up one morning, found to my shock that we'd had a break-in, and then , to my horror, that some sick prat had stolen my cover. Being on a humble English teacher's wage, I can't do anything about having it medically corrected right now. Wouldn't want to really. Having a low maintenance head is a blessing. You should try it. I'm sure this style has got to be the next fashion head-wise. There's not many choices left. Imagine that. A bunch of women with landing strip hair styles - shaving the middle bit off . Just imagine me as an emoticon with sideburns and a goatee.
BTW Colleen, now that we're pals, do you think I should change my user name? I knew of the connotation of course, but the assumption isn't that automatic here in Oz. How about 'Skinny'?
'Skin'?
'Head'?
Actually, I'm just practising on this forum (to try n get back to the OP's point}. I'll be heading over to the Korea forums as soon as my K-forum visa comes through from Dave. I couldn't find the register page link over there, so I joined up here coz I could. I'm having fun. This posting deal is a load-o-chuckles. I've been reading you all for years, but joining was a great idea. It's like Christmas. Bung off a couple of posts in the evening, go to bed, check the sack in the mornin'. Yippee. |

Hey, no need to apologize. We're all victims of events beyond our control.
For example, I'm an American. I didn't ASK to be one; that's just the way
I came out, so to speak. And, if you think being a "skinhead" can make you a victim of generalized (and, I might add, thoroughly unjustified) abuse, you should try being a Yank.
Of course, as with having a low maintenance head, being an American can have its blessings. If I were fat, for example, I'd have the perfect excuse (I can't help it; I'm American). If I felt like picking on small nations and beating up on all sorts of people, well, what else could be expected? I'm an American, after all.
So I applaud your attitude - when life hands you a lemon, make lemonade, right? And, the next time anyone asks you if you're getting bald, just stare at him/her straight on, and, with a grin above your chin and a twinkle in you eye, reply:
"Sure, but not as often as I'd like".
Regards,
John |

Dear Aramas,
As near as I could figure out, it must have been:
SH-163
Hoody Sweatshirt Style 2- "Iron Cross"
which DID rather look skinheaded - well, sort of. And the "Iron Cross" clinched the deal. I mean, a hood and an Iron Cross - case closed.
Regards,
John |

from this hilarious site:
http://www.bobfromaccounting.com/2_25_02/wifebeaterarticle.html
Skinhead, I once new a person who collected WWII memorabilia, we had known each other since we were children. One day I went into his house to see he collection --I remember, it was the summer I had shaven my head--which by the way, is one of the greatest feelings in the world--and just happened to be wearing my Doc Martin boots. In case you don't know, this is kind of the American skinhead uniform, which I didn't realize at the time; I just liked a breeze on my scalp and a good boot. So he takes me upstairs to see his private collection and starts pulling out a lot of nazi items, some of which are rare and unique and I imagine quite valuable for collectors; he also started talking to his daughter in German, which was interesting considering there were no Germans around including him. He then started defending Hitler's original agenda before that man had gotten mixed up with the wholesale slaughter of Jews. We said our goodbyes and I haven't been over there since, although his family and my family have been close for ages. Was he a collector? Or something more? A simple direct question may have answered, but I didn't have the guts then to ask.
Anyway, welcome--and don't be fooled JohnSlat's velvet insults! Lemons indeed....
