Or is this not necessary?

I should get it authenticated and started ASAP.

Most places, no. I seem to remember something on here about it being needed somewhere (Mongolia?), but..........

The place that has offered me a contract didn't require a police check. However, during the interview, they did ask me have you ever been convicted of a crime - which I truthfully answered no.

If all they do is ask you, you can quite just simply lie and say no. I didn't think a police check was needed for any province in China, but most countries do require it - for example, South Korea and Taiwan.

No, most countries don't require it. Though many in East Asia do, I've never heard of a country outside that region requiring it for a visa.

And the issue with the FBI check is probably not that the OP has a criminal record, but that it takes something like six weeks to get, and then another month or so to apostille. Which means that for Americans, planning to work in a place that requires an FBI CRBC requires some advance planning. I imagine few places are likely to wait an extra couple months for you to get your check done.

Thank you everybody for your helpful responses. I went to the China Embassy website and it did not state a CRC to get a Z Visa. Thank goodness. Very Happy

I asked because the process to request a FBI CRC is daunting. I'll have to wait at least 3 months (including the apostille) to get it completed. I am planning to leave in May (for either Thailand or China). I can teach in Korea next year or later.
