I'm interested in picking up some extra hours teaching online - has anyone had good experiences with a particular company? Looking through the job ads I'm a bit hesitant to hand over my bank details in order to be paid as some seem to want. Any recommendations? ETO/OpenEnglish etc.?

Well, how else are you going to get paid?

Preferably Paypal/some said Western Union - I was just looking for anyone who had experience with this - or could vouch for a company - as I'd never heard of most of the companies that wanted bank details!

You could just set up a bank account that is only used for the company you are teaching for to wire money into. By this I mean a bank account with nothing in it other than the minimum required to open a bank account.

Not always as simple. It's just taken me eight months to open a bank account in the UK, and although even the bank themselves recognise that's unacceptable, it can be a huge hassle. Time-consuming and expensive, once you factor in all those phone calls to find out what they're playing at.

But I don't really understand why the OP is reluctant to hand over bank details. They can't steal money out of your account just by you giving them your account number / IBAN etc.

Paypal isn't always a good option. You'll lose some of what you're paid in charges, and the person paying might also be able to get back what they paid you if they claim you didn't provide the goods / services. No questions asked with Paypal, either. They'll just take the money from your "account" and "investigate" later.

Paypal charges 2.9% of what you are paid. If you are only makng $10-12 teaching online, that can really cut into your earnings.

Well, I can personally vouch for Open English, I have been working for them for two years. I also have a friend who works for TutorABC and another who works for English town, in both cases upwards of 6 months. No problems with pay. With Open English you can get paid via PayPal, but as some pointed out, they do take a chunk of your earnings.
