Sounds dodgy to me.

So what will probably happen is, once you're there, you will be working on the tourist visa. They will dangle the proper visa in front of your noise, while you, who has no cash waits to get paid, and can't bug out to greener pastures because you don't have enough for a flight. So then, when they finally get you the inadequate business visa, you in your relative legitimacy think that your employer has integrity and you're safe.

Then you get sodomized by the PSB and deported. If you're gonna do this, I'd strongly advise being in a city where your country has an embassy or consulate.

In reply to Choudoufu's comment, the college is in Henan Province. I got the impression that that province was relatively strict about the medical requirement. I am going to post a question about it.

Thanks Doogsville, but is that what you did? Did you go to an NHS doctor to get the medical check? Is it really possible to omit the x-ray?
I also have a problem with having to do the whole thing twice, but I will bear in mind what you said if I decide to go to China in September. As it turns out, I decided I would be best to wait until I have more savings.

I've got two Z visas in three years in China and had two perfectly good medical checks at mainland Chinese hospitals in the process. The last check-up and x-ray I had revealed a few small kidney stones. The hospital x-ray nurse helped me get the medicine I needed to get rid of the stones. She spoke no English ... she did not have to go out of her way to help me, but she did.

People who say it's not possible to get good medical service in China have an agenda to push. Like any service, you may want to shop around, you may want to take your time, you may want a second opinion, but good service is not difficult to find.
