On a lighter note, I'm calling all Jeddans and Riyadhers(?) to tell me what makes your city good place for a small family from California. Let's make this thread have the most replies! |

Why didn't you add a poll to your question?
Jeddah? I think kids would enjoy being closer to the sea. Also it's somewhat more liberal than Riyadh.
However, I like Riyadh because the climate has a dry heat, Jeddah is too humid for me.
They are both very big, polluted and congested with traffic so...
Actually you should go where the best job is because you spend alot of your time at work; your family will tag along and make the best of it |

I was thinking about doing a poll, but I changed my mind because the bar graph is quite lame compared to insightful answers like yours.
I though it would work, but having my family tag a long and try to make the best didn't cut it this year, so we're fleeing this coop in the summer. The pay bites anyway.
Is there more cash to be made in Riyadh? A buddy of mine tells me that people are raking in a LOT from private tutoring. $$$$$$ |

I worked for 3 different employeres in Jeddah. I visited Riyadh for a few days.
I did not like Riyadh at all. Jeddah was good - especially when I worked for the Airline and lived on the compound in Khalediya with my family. |

Either city... I would think compound life is the way to go with a family in tow...if you can get into a decent one... |

People from Jeddah are "Jeddawis". If from Riyadh, I assume they are "Riyadhis".
Of course both cities have grown from the size of a village in one generation. Most people are actually from somewhere else. |

Scotty boy, in Arabic they're called Jeddawi and Najdis.
Do/Can women drive on the compounds? I've heard pretty much everything else can happen on them. |

Najdi is someone from the Province of Najd (also Nejd). Riyadhi is someone from Riyadh.
I do not need to learn how to suck eggs.

No chance, unless you're in Dhahran (Aramco HQ). Compounds aren't really big enough to warrant driving around in and you'll no doubt annoy the other residents ... but assuming from your name that you're an American, then you are probably used to driving 50 metres to the store. Saudis do the same. My neighbour drives about 40 metres to the mosque and back "because it's too hot". |

Women drove frequently on my compound and were never bothered. Youre qute right about the distances but two or three hundred metres can be a long way with a pile of shopping and a couple of little ones with you. |
