I didn't live there, but visited a Chinese friend there. The city itself didn't seem too bad. It was a good size for getting around and still having some where to go. Some pretty areas around the river. Usual Chinese city stuff. From the city by bus Shanghai is about 2.5 to 3 hours. Nantong is NOT on the main train lines through Jiangsu. I don't know if there is any train at all.

If you are in "Greater Nantong" you may feel isolated. That part of Jiangsu is cut off from the rest of the province and the other areas outside the city that I was able to see were more industrial than natural. Lot's of light industry further out.

I have visited Nantong several times.
It is a bit isolated from the rest of Jiangsu, but it is an OK city.
It does have a Metro supermarket, and an area with several Western restaurants .
Not the best place to be in China, but not so bad either.

I lived there for a year. It gets boring very quickly. I think its much better on the other side of the Yangtze, Suzhou, Wuxi and Changzhou are far better places to live and all have WEBs. They also pay better. WEB Nantong will tell you that the cost of living there is lower, in fact I would say its slightly more expensive and its more isolated transport wise. Having said that you can survive there but you will have a better experience elsewhere.
cheers

For some reason, I had that same feeling just by looking at it on a map. That's helpful, thanks.
