I'm a certified secondary school "Social Studies" (history, geography type stuff) teacher at home in the USA. I taught high school history for about 13 years, mostly in my home state of New Jersey. |

Could you clarify please? What do you mean by 'an actual teaching certificate' ?
Also your poll question appears to have a heavy North American bias, maybe expand your parameters, not everyone fits into the very small boxes you've created. |

I'm certified: that is, I got a TEFL certificate after doing a month-long program. I usually think of "real teachers" as teachers who are licensed by a governmental or quasi-governmental entity to teach the general public, especially primary and secondary school children. |

Yeah I voted, then read the responses, then wished I could take my vote back. What a waste of time and an utterly idiotic set of responses to what was a legitimate question. |

Must mean me, I often respond idiotically by asking genuine questions but I always respond idiotically when people are patronising, ill mannered and rude. |

My assumption was that the question was simply shorthand for asking who holds a BEd (or more), plus QTS, registration, blue/ yellow/ green cards or whatever "real" classroom teachers are required to have in one's home jurisdiction.
Of course, if any teacher in a place where British English is standard is certified, they will no longer be permitted to teach, but be put into the care of the Mental Health Authority there...
Some decades ago, I was a registered music teacher in Australia; later qualified for registration as a primary teacher in Hong Kong and also in Macau. |
