Hi one and all, hope to move back to the middle east, had worked in Turkey for many years, now want to work in the UAE.
From all the posts I have read it looks like you need your PhD to get a good job(well paying)

I have a Masters in Education and Business Admin. Plus 15 years high school teaching along with 3 years in higher education, do you think this is enough or should I head back to the Bul (Istanbul for short) Hope you can help out. Smile

Exactly what have your many years of experience entailed? That is, what specifically have you taught at the high school and higher ed levels? Do you also have a CELTA or other equivalent TEFL cert? A teaching license from your home country?

Generally, a doctorate degree + relevant experience are necessary to teach content (non-EFL) courses. A few unis may also require instructors in these positions to be fluent in both Arabic and English (written and spoken).

Based on the info you've provided, your quals/experience aren't likely to get you a uni position in the UAE. Not only do you lack tertiary-level teaching (for non-TEFL content), but for teaching EFL, you'd need to have a CELTA/equivalent TEFL cert. + teaching experience gained after obtaining the cert. Also, some unis don't consider an education degree relevant for teaching EFL.

But certainly take a look at the current openings on TESOL Arabia's job fair link and on HigherEdJobs.com and the Chronicle to see the type and level of qualifications and experience (TEFL and non-TEFL) UAE university employers expect.

A lot of your experience is at high school, you could try to go in that direction. Some of the better paid positions will be at least 15k for your quals and experience.

Teaching high school in the UAE isn't an option since he/she lacks the requisite teaching license.

Well, I know for a fact that a teaching license is, in some cases, not actually required at elementary level (up to grade 6). Perhaps his MA in education would help to achieve a high school position?

Would it hurt him to try?

It never hurts to apply and see what happens.

The better paying jobs with the better conditions normally require a cert/license from your home country. For instance, Teachaway requires it for all of their public school jobs that they are hiring for, but the "iffy" international schools will often take anyone.

Of course not, just as I stated in one of my previous posts. No one is discouraging the OP from applying for any position. I'm just addressing his/her questions about qualifications for teaching commerce/business or EFL at the tertiary level---the OP's desired teaching situation.

As VS stated, there are some iffy international k-12 schools that might not have a problem with the lack of a teaching license. However, the OP has a family to support and children to educate and therefore, probably wouldn't be interested in a risky hit-or-miss teaching situation.
