there is a one-day legal holiday, which falls on thursday. your school will
be closed on friday, giving you a four-day break.
are you with me so far? in order to get that four-day break, you make up
that free friday on the prior sunday (or perhaps saturday).
now it get's complicated. weekend #1, you got only one day off. this
is followed by a shortened work-week totaling four days. weekend #2
is a groovy four-days off.
now let's do the math. before holiday implementation.....four free days.
after holiday implantation......five free days.
honorable? i don't see how that word fits the situation. logical would
perhaps be a more logical choice.
legal? um, it's their country, their laws.
**********
but you know.....now that i see it in black n'white pixels, maybe it's not
so illogical after all. i can imagine joe the plumber and sarah the big
game hunter hanging around the water cooler monday morning chatting:
Joe: hey, sarah, my buddy is teaching english in china, and he says when
they get a holiday on thursday, they move a sunday back from the
weekend before.
sarah: why would they do that? from my front porch i can see the
mailbox.
joe: well, as we all know, a four-day break is better than a three-day
break!
sarah: oh, yes, joe. every coin has two sides. mama grizzly hates
one-day weekends, but four-day hunting trips sure make up for it!
joe: and so on. |

This is SOP in China. I've never been at a government university here where the days aren't made up. Nothing to get in a twist about, it's still the same number of hours.

Precisely. In addition, who else is making up the days? THE STUDENTS. Their holiday. Never heard them gripe about it, why should we? |

Yet again, I have been notified "just in a nick of time", today, that I have to come to work on this Sunday. After that, I can take my holidays..8 days of happiness.
What puzzles me is that why breaking the weekends and making peoples people as well as us the laowai fine experts to work when we could go to the church. Say for example, if we took the holidays earlier than that 1st of October, we could have ended up with 9 days and both weekends off actually..if my calculations are correct. Yes, we'd gain one more day. My reasoning behind is that why break both weekends and make people work there when they didn't have to "break so much". I love the reasoning of Chinese.

what ticks me off is the disregard for peoples people and all other tax paying people in this country that are always affected by such decisions from these autocratic rulers. i had a plan for this weekend (both days). also, i've made a friend with a neighbor of mine. believe it or not, but we both visit a church on sundays. believe it or not, we both are of the same lelief. no, i am not joking and please do not take this in a wrong way!!!

sorry for the unclear post of mine from before. what i meant was that they (the officials) can enforce the holidays' "start and end dates" and that if it is suitable or not to the businesses in peoples country.

i don't really think so. there are 4, and that 3 for national day and 1 for midautumn. the rest are the weekend days that have been tampered with. well, you can say it isn't tampering as the officials have their rights to make decisions. yes. however, my calculations tell me that if we took these 8 days from the oct 1st to the 8th and if we worked on this sunday, monday and tuesday as well as after the holidays friday and saturday (9th and 10th of oct) we'd be ripped off by one day (weekend).

with all due respect to you, 5 to 12 news that i'd work on sunday and after i've made plans isn't ok to me and i'd voice my opinion anytime it'd happen, this time inclusive. not that i was caught off guard, but upset, yet again! there are somethings that peoples officials and/or the leaders will never learn. either, the holidays or swine flu aren't "a surprise", are they? and, they've got the calculators to figure the days of holidays out, don't they? still, their (authorities) mandate around the country varies so much about these holidays.
yesterday, i was told to come to work on sunday, but today i was told not to come to work on sunday. i guess i can go to that church with my neighbor after all.
now, a rumor is that we (in chongqing) will be taking holidays from this saturday on which means we may not have to come to work on either monday or tuesday next week...from the horse's mouth though at the moment |

So, I am adjusting my schedule to the needs of the local educational system and its leaders. Despite my experience that students underperform under such conditions, I am keeping it all totally nonconfrontational.
Having said that, however, my superiors, who usually are pretty slow messengers, have not notified me about the upcoming changes yet. Still I must prepare and perhaps inquire what others have been doing.
Now, how have you been coping with such schedules and have you been told of the upcoming holidays yet? |

Good day,
Today, we have been given a schedule which over the next two weeks allows us 3 days off only. Those 3 days are the next weeks Thursday, Friday and Saturday. So, well have to work the upcoming weekend as well as Sunday next week.
Now, while Chinese staff members are telling me that this is China and that everyone here should get used to it, foreign teachers are somewhat divided. It seems it comes down to their characters or perhaps some other aspects of their lives. To me, although I do not like the way my school does things, I like my job and the fact that I make difference in my students future lives. Moreover, I have developed a social network in the area where I am. To the point, the program director has presented us with an interesting view on the situation. According to him, our next years contracts may depend on how willing we are to compromise with the schools leadership.
Conclusively, it isnt about our ambiguously worded employment agreements or local laws but about who we work with and how disposed to accept terms or how dedicated to our jobs/locations we are.
Regards to all committed foreign teachers,
Joe |

This is not QUITE the schedule for everyone. I will have this coming weekend (March 30-31) completely off. Then, back to school for April 1-2-3 (M/Tu/W). Then, three days off, April 4-5-6 (Th/F/Sa). Then back to school for 6 days . . . Sun., April 7 to Friday, April 12.
Then, a couple weeks later, we'll get to do it all over again! Whee!
I'd MUCH rather work this Sunday through Wednesday and enjoy a 4 day "holiday", but alas . . . |

yes, you are correct. it seems i have been misunderformed by
the department office.
we'll 'maybe' have to work next sunday. so we'll have the regular
weekend at the end of this week, then a 3-day week, followed by a
3-day break next weekend.
we'll have thursday-friday-saturday off, followed by a six-day work week.
but imagine if they just gave us the holiday off!
how many here would be complaining about getting thursday off,
then having to come back to school for just one day before having
the weekend!
they'd be whining about how stupid and illogical and immoral (and quite
possibly, illegal) it were! |

I am working this weekend and then Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. After that, I get the three-day holiday out of which one day is the "honorable day". On Sunday, I am back to work. According to my calculations, we'll have one 3-day weekend in two weeks. Without the "honorable day", we'd have a couple of 2-day usual weekends. |

Thank goodness my contract says weekends are untouchable.
I doubt Qingming has the same meaning it did in the past, they could just push it to friday.
Oh, wait, Chinese are traditional and will all be at the graves of hundreds of ancestors on thursday. Hold on, isn't that old thought that was destroyed by the revolution. Maybe perverted is a better word.
They might as well add eggs and rabbits to the holiday. |

Its quite sad that some old-timers who should know better have guts to debate messengers instead of messages. What an extreme aversion for my very full schedule which has just been adjusted. My foreign colleagues and I are going to have this weekend off after all (last minute notice). However, thats not the same for my local coworkers unfortunately. How about giving them some respect!
Have a good weekend,

Even if you were still working this weekend, that had nothing to do with the coming holiday, which is being dealt with the following weekend. Your boss probably just felt like sticking an extra day on your schedule, because he could. Enjoy the holy days |
