Apocalypse Now, directed by FF Coppola, is mostly set in Viet Nam and was shot in the Phillipines.

If you want a taste of Cambodia, a more relevant movie might be City of Ghosts, directed by and starring Matt Dillon with James Caan. That film was mostly shot in Phnom Penh, the seaside town of Kep and an Angkor-period temple.

There's also a book entitled Off the Rails in Phnom Penh.

Both are those are a bit dated though. Cambodia, especially Phnom Penh, has developed and cleaned up quite a lot in the last 10 - 12 years in terms of roads, buildings and tourism but the "dark underbelly" of the place is still there, just maybe a little less visible.

The people are charming, the economy is growing, things are buzzing and there is a special ancient feel to the place; but there are also still a lot of drugs, guns, violence, gangsters, scammers, crime, razor wire and poverty.

Siem Reap is full frontal darkness. Lovely country and the Khmer who are hard at work, you barely get to know. I suppose like anywhere else, the out of work Khmers gamble, drink, run scams on tourists. Scambodia is a popular ex-pat nickname. There's that side. There''s another.
