....bar work? Can't imagine that'd you would be hired, honestly. I'm not really too sure what the draw factor for you would be to the bar owner, when they could easily hire a Viet to sling bia for 30,000VND per hour. |
Bar work/bar tending is illegal for foreigners (as far as I know).
That job is one of those jobs that a local can do, so a foreigner doing that job would be taking a job from a local. |
I've met quite a few Westerners in Saigon who work as managers at the expat bars. Needless to say they have years of experience in hospitality management. In regards to being a bartender/waiter, like Mattingly and LetterArtruZ said, I can't see why you would want to do that here. The hours are long, the wages are very low and the chances of legal work would be slim to none. |

OP -
Have you considered Phnom Penh?
You might think about trying to get some work there, The pay is generally lower but lifestyle, atmosphere and visa situation may be better for you.
Bus from HCMC to PP is about 6 hours and $12, if things aren't working out the way you'd like them too.
I wouldn't really recommend Thailand, especially for trying to freelance. |

I know a couple of bar (and restaurant) managers. That is possible if there is a need by the business and someone has experience. Experience working with VNese staff is also an important thing to have.
I thought the OP asking about bartending b/c I believe he stated "bar work." |

Sure, but there are also food and drink waiters working in bars. In any event, unless you are management in a large, successful pub, any type of bar work here is something I certainly wouldn't recommend anyone to come half way around the world to do. |

Those are 99% or even 100% Vietnamese.

Agreed. VN is not the place for it. |

Well, what's that BSc. in?
If you can write software, set yourself up with some contract work in the UK, then come here. That way you can get western wages, but local cost of living.
You could probably generate at least some income teaching english... and it's interesting to at least try it. However, if your background allows for it, there are other (though less popular) ways to make money here.
..I have seen exactly one foreigner working as a bartender here, though I suspect her family owns the place.
