Hello
I am to complete my course in May and due to circumstances beyond my control <I fractured both my wrists on Sunday> my thoughts have turned to what I am going to do with the future.
Stafford House are advertising for people to work in their summer school, looking on their website it looks like time with them would definitely be intense - 6 day week, residential (none of the sites are near enough for me to live at home) but what I wondering was is the experience valid? They provide all the teaching/resources etc which doesn't really leave much room for me to be a teacher....
Also what is their general reputation? They seem to be honest in saying that they expect a six day week/provide an example timetable etc
Can any suggest any other good summer schools? I am obviously going to start looking at abroad too but where to start??
Thanks

Huh? If this is your first real teaching experience after the CELTA, then this sounds ideal. Knowing what the syllabus is and what materials you need to use gives you everything you need to be an effective teacher. Rather than having to fish around to find materials you can concentrate on classroom management, identifying student's weak areas for improvement, etc.
Plus don't forget, even the most closely planned lessons and curriculums are going to have gaps in them. That activity that was supposed to last for thirty minutes but only took 15 because only half the students turned up - that sort of thing. Or an activity that was supposed to practise grammar point Y was not sufficient for students and you had to add further practice. Or that time when neither you nor the students could face one more exercise / activity on X and you had to be flexible or face revolt... Don't worry - there's always room to adapt.
For more up-to-date info on UK summer schools, try the UK forum. I seem to remember that Stafford House had a good rep, but these things change over time. |
