Tovarishi!

I thought it would be interesting to share our thoughts on what aspect of Russian cultural life most has made our stay in the Motherland even more enjoyable than it would naturally be already. For me it is the Tchaikovsky Conservatory:

What about you?

Of course. The Conservatory is the Mecca of classical music. Unmatched, without peer, a shrine. My Favorite Place On Earth.

Unfortunately (and we've discussed this before) expats are generally immune to the glories of the arts in Moscow. All they want to do is complain about poor quality veg, bad drivers, and hostile overcrowding in the Metro (never mind that the Metro itself is a fantastic art museum).

Forest for the trees and all that, eh?

I fear you may be right, but I cling to my faith in the perfectibility of humankind. All it takes is a little guidance from the Party. Look at this for sheer perfection:

one of the few real pleasures among the madness of Moscow was the chance to hear classical music concerts at a fraction of what you would pay in London-and often with repertory soloists and conductors! I saw Maxim Vengerov play the Shostakovitch 1st violin concerto for peanuts for example!
