Canadians have to apply for non-residency for tax purposes with the Canada Revenue Agency if they are working in a country that does not have a reciprocal tax agreement with Canada. Americans are tax free up to a certain $ value. UK was (and I'm not certain it is still applicable) tax free as soon as you leave????

Check with the Australian Tax Agency. They're the only ones who can give you a definitive (and correct) answer.

I to, pay tax to the Australian Tax Office but work in the KSA. The rules changed under Rudd, a few years ago. If you declare yourself non-resident you do not have to pay tax. However, if you are planning to work 3 years or fewer abroad you are apparently required to pay tax. I was told this by my accountant but many Aussies are still unaware of this requirement. This includes all types of workers including pilots and nurses etc.

Thanks for the replies

I have been told by my accountant here that if I take a 3 year contract and am a non resident for this time then I do not have to pay tax. ( just as the previous poster mentioned)
