Someone offered me their air conditioner. Is used bad? Any problems with mold? I've heard some things. |

How much were they asking for it? I would say that if it is 1 or 2 years old, then half the original price would be fair. If it is older than that, I would get a new one. (Our company housing came with an ancient air conditioner and it has needed some repairs.) |

My in-laws just had two new ones put in here. Installation was ¥1 in total `cos the shop arranged it. One air con was reduced by 40% because it was last year`s model (still brand new). In a word; `no`. |

How old is it? What sized room is it rated for? What model? What's the energy efficiency rating? How much is he/she asking? You're not giving us much to go with here. |

It's free, other than that I don't know details.
Basically someone got married and had an extra one. Although I just heard the remote is lost
I'd have to pay someone to install it so I guess that's where the cost comes into play.
DavidW those are good questions, guess I never really dealt with this stuff - we don't really need it where I come from (Seattle). I'll have to ask more questions. |

Installation can be expensive. A colleague paid 40,000 yen, but that included taking it out of the old apt too. Check out the recycle shops or denki stores and see what they charge for installation.
The remote is important, most you can't work manually so you'll have to buy a remote. |

Okay thanks for the tips guys.
I heard the air con is rated for 12tatami rooms and is about 7 years old. Of course the remote is still missing so I may just pass. |

Whoever is trying to pass off this aircon to you is not very nice.
Since its so old, and has no remote, it means its useless.
I'd also suspect they were pretty sneaky too. They possibly cant sell it to a recycle shop (since its so old and with no remote) and they would have to PAY to have it picked up for trash disposal.
Thus giving it to -you- for "free" allows them to avoid an unwanted expense.
I can tell ya another trick you might be able to do for a new airconditioner:
Many electronics stores have yearly or quarterly special sales where the 1st X number of people can get certain items at really reduced prices. There is a Gigas Kansai store near where I live that does this. I picked up an airconditioner that way for 20,000. Granted, I had to get up at 3am and sit in line until 10am, but it was worth it and kinda fun. I've done it 3 times. |
