|
|
I will be looking for a teaching job starting in August/September in Mexico City. I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations of language schools and/or primary/secondary schools that hire native speakers for English classes. I have a TEFL certificate and 3 years of experience. I'm open to anything, from kids to business English.
Any thoughts on working for big box companies like Harman Hall, Berlitz, International House, etc? pros and cons?
Can you recommend some good neighborhoods to live/work in Mexico City?
Is it too early to start looking for jobs now? When is the best time for me to BE in Mexico city for interviews?
And what about salary - can anyone give me a range of what I might shoot for in terms of hourly rate?
any advice would be appreciated! Cheers! |

Here's a list of the top 100 schools in Mexico City...good place to start looking at primary and secondary schools. You won't qualify for any of the schools at the very top of that list without a state teaching license or related degree though (you didn't mention your degree?)

Low pay, few or no benefits are the cons. Pros are that you'll not have to think much about what you teach as it is all scripted for you. International House is probably the best of the lot and the pay is better if you take the business English class route teaching off-premises though you might have to travel around a lot. Luck of the draw there.

Colonias Roma, Polanco, Condesa, Del Valle, San Miguel Chapultepec, Juarez, Cuauhtemoc, Napoles, and Narvarte are all fairly central and nice. Work can be found all over the city but there are clusters of language schools in Polanco, Santa Fe, Del Valle, and Roma. Some of those areas are pretty pricey to find a place to live in, so adjacent colonias are good to look at.

Never too early...for the primary and secondary schools, they started doing job fairs and laying out staffing needs in January. That will be ongoing until the start of the school year in mid August. The very best time to be here would be August to catch any unfilled openings.
For language institutes, hiring is done year round. Downtimes are the Christmas and Easter periods.

Anywhere from 30 pesos and hour to 500 an hour....very wide gulf. The 'big box' language institutes pay the least, usually. Business English classes at smaller institutes will vary between 120 and 200 pesos per hour, but never full time hours.
Mid-range primary and secondary schools will pay anywhere between 7000 and 20000 pesos per month, some with good benefits, many with few or none. Top, top schools are 25000+ pesos per month. |

What does your snarky comment have to do with the OP's job search? |

I've been to Tepito and I would agree that it's fun only during the day before 5pm as long as you dont wear any expensive jewlery, watches, or carry a cellphone or backpack- its great fun! |

Well, there wont be any side trips to La Merced since it burned down, putting hundreds of small businessmen in dire circumstances, and effecting scores more businesses (ours included) who depended on produce and other good purchases there. Not sure why you lumped La Merced in with Tepito, they are not the same at all. But any old insult will do, however you have to stretch to get it in, I guess. |

Bah the Merced is the size of most Canadian cities...only a small kitchen part bunrt down. And they are are already back up and in business.
Agree with the faux pas of lumping in Merced with Tepito...may as well say that Argentines are Brazilian....a million miles apart. |

La Merced is not a town but rather a large sprawling market in the heart of Mexico City. |

Thats cool- it sounds like a nice place, I only know about Terapito and Centro, even though I've come to Mexico about 25 times already. |

Stay AWAY from the language mills, all of them are a joke with poverty wages.
Colegios are the only stable and decent job to be had, that is, on a regular basis... There are a few gems out there, besides colegios, but you either gotta be in the know or know somebody to get those gigs. Or just plain dumb luck. |
