Alrighty.. Heading off for 9-10 days to Tokyo from Korea this Saturday..
I'm crashing at my buddy's place, so atleast that will save me some cash..
But having never been there before, I'm curious as to what are some of the MUST DO things in Tokyo (other than Japanese women -- wanted to beat some of you to the punch there)..
Places to go, things to see and/or do...
I've heard everything is expensive as hell and I'm going to do my best not to break the bank (other than the partying on weekends) but any recommendations would be appreciated... if it's worth doing, I'm willing to pay for it..
For example, ow much would an excursion to Mt. Fuji cost?
Thanks in advance.. |

Hi Sarcasm...
You might want to check out:
The main centres of Shinjuku and Shibuya for shopping; Go to the top of Tokyo Metropolitan Gov. Office in Nishi Shinjuku for a view of Tokyo; Sensoji in Asakusa (famous temple); take a strolldown Omotesando (Tokyo's Europe wannabe); Check out the goth kids hanging out outside Yoyogi Koen; take a bath at Oedo Onsen (hot spring - about 3000 entry charge); Take a day trip to Nikko (famous temple and beautiful countryside - about 4000 return on the train); Day trip to Kamakura - home of Big Buddha (about 1500 return on the train) ... If you love onsen you could try a day trip to Hakone (many onsen and lovely countryside - about 4000 return)..
As for Fuji.... probably about 5000 on the train or bus (return)... Although as it's rainy season, you probably won't see much from a distance. As for climbing it... There are better ways to spend a holiday IMHO.
Have fun! |

There's also Meiji Shrine in Harajuku, which can be quite nice. And the Tsukiji Fish Market (I never went!), shopping in Odaiba, buying english books at Tower Records in Shibuya, singing karaoke in a Hello Kitty room at the Big Echo (?) on Sotobori Dori (the street that runs in front of Tokyo Station, Yaesu side), tons of museums in Ueno Park, the Imperial Palace, Tokyo Tower (I always thought it was quite ugly...and you have to pay to get up to the observation levels, so the Metropolitan Government Offices in Shinjuku is defintely a better suggestion - it's free!), walking down Chuo Dori in Ginza (Tokyo's wannabe Rodeo Drive), checking out all the latest electronics in Akihabara, and the Toyota Amlux Building in Ikebukuro.
And that's all I can think of! |

I am not sure about the cost of an excursion to Mt. Fuji. I was there in '97, and I would think climbing Mt. Fuji is one of the ultimate expereinces of living in Japan. I am not sure it ics climbing season though, I climbed in August.
It is well worth the adventure, and time, and money to see the sunrise from the summit. I can still remember that sunrise. It would be more fun to climb with a small group of people. Bring sunblock and use it. |
