Hi everyone,

I know this is a TEFL website but I've noticed that the American University of Cairo often advertise faculty positions with their History Department and I'm just wondering if anyone here might know what the university is like to work for in a subject area other than EFL. I've done a search and there are a lot of threads on AUC, but they are EFL related, which, of course, is understandable. If you have heard anything through a friend etc. or, better yet, know something based on your own experiences and don't mind commenting it would be great to hear from you. Many thanks!

AUC has always been a good stable trustworthy employer. It has been in Egypt for a very long time, so it is a sort of combination American/local system, but they have always taken good care of their expat faculty and staff. I really don't know anything specific about the history department and I don't believe that we have any members here right now who would know specific circumstances.

Normally I would have no qualms about recommending a job there. But, with the Arab Spring, there have been some student demonstrations and strikes the last couple years and I would expect these students to stay politically active. Expats, of course, steer clear of things and I haven't heard about any expat faculty personally having problems. It wouldn't concern me much, as one can usually avoid getting directly involved in the local politics... and stay away from demonstrations in the usual locations.

As long as this situation doesn't concern you, apply, and get an interview. I'm sure that the politics of it would come up in the interview.
