|
|
Just wondering if anyone is waiting to get a visa to work at any of the Colleges of Technology? I was offered a job in early February and I still have not have received my visa.
Is it possible that the Ministry is no longer issuing visas for teachers who were hired by agencies?
I read somewhere that the agencies (TATI, CECN, Al Nawa Mgmt, etc) are being phased out of the hiring and that the Ministry would be hiring teachers for the colleges. Also, teachers who are already at the colleges would be offered new contracts directly from the ministry.
Any insights on the current situation would be appreciated. |

Do you recall where you read this? It hasn't come up here.
I thought that they were giving out entry visas. My last stint there, they offered me a visa, but I had a multi-entry tourist visa in my passport (for GCC employees) and I just came in on it. So, it is possible to come in on a tourist visa. I know that SQU provides an entry visa to new teachers coming in...

YAEP! I'm still waiting as well.
I was suppose to be there in February. But are you referring to the approval letter from the Ministry or the actual visa?????
My recruiter told me that once they have the approval letter they will apply for the visa (it only takes 10 days) but if I need to be there ASAP then they will bring me in on a tourist visa and then do the paperwork for the employment visa while I'm there.
As for approval letters I'm not sure anything will happen now. The academic year ends in July, I think we will be joining in September. |

The university I work for is phasing out all the ELS teachers and doing direct hires next semester. Don't know if that is a new country policy or just my university. |

VS,
I am not sure where I saw it but maybe it was the Oman Forum.
Lovesand,
I meant the approval letter. My recruiter also said about it would take from 7 to 10 days but that was back in February. I asked for an update a week ago and I got a reply saying that they had no idea when this would happen.
If the job is not going to start until September I can't understand why the agency doesn't say this. I am about to start looking for something else. |

MOM has started hiring directly for the Colleges of Technology, but as far as I know, and I am agency employed, the agenies are also still recruiting. It seems, and this is the rumor, that maybe in the near future the agencies will go bye, bye, but for the time being that is not confirmed. MOM had adverts recently recruiting. They require a Masters in English or related fields for non-Omanis and also require that both degress be related to the job. Many people agency employed at the COTs have applied to go over to the Ministry, but due to the requirements many experienced and excellent teachers could not as they do not have the requisite MA. That bites, but maybe this is what will happen from here in. |

I interviewed with a recruiter and got a position with SCT starting in September. The woman at the agency told me I'd need a new visa, but wouldn't need to leave the country to do so. Apparently once all the paperwork is finished, I can do everything in one day; cancel my current Omani visa and get a new one in Salalah. |

The tech colleges in Oman are run by the Ministry of Manpower. What's causing your visa delay is the getting of a letter of employment--i.e. approval-- from the said ministry, who are dealing with a million such applications across the board. You may be invited to enter Oman on a tourist visa, which will be soon converted to a work visa in-country, but only after your employment has been approved. It's mid-summer, so don't expect any rapid action. |

I spoke to someone at MOHE and she said they were presently processing 200 to 300 teacher apps hence the delay. I was told I would be brought in on a "regular" visa and it will take 6 weeks to get the work visa. I joked that that is how they keep "runners" from bolting the first week out the gate. |

That wouldn't stop any runners. All you have to do is take a taxi to the airport and leave any time you want... this week or next week or next year. There is nothing to stop you. So, I expect that she had no idea what you were talking about...

Hard to be a runner without a passport! I was told they will keep my passport for up to 6 weeks while the work visa is being processed. That's why I said it was hard to leave. Sounds suspicious to me as I cannot believe it takes 6 weeks to process a work visa. UAE only took 48 hours |
