Hello,
What is the "current" mandatory forced retirement age. I've seen ads that say nobody over 55 or 58 and then I've seen things that say Immigration is making 60 the mandatory age. However, I know people who were 63 when I met them 10 years ago.
What about people who are over 62 who already have an Iqama coming up for renewal? perplexing to say the least.

It all depends on the employer. Supposed to be 60 but there are disputes about meaning. 60 Gregorian or 60 Hegira ! Many employers - even govt institutions keeep teachers on afetr 60. Generally you have to get in there before 60. I left aged 64, but there were people 10 years older than that still teaching !

Many threads here deal with this issue. Try the "SEARCH" function.

Arbitrary decisons made by the employer. The older you get the less likely you will get in or stay in 55-58 possible to get in, after 60 your chances diminish considerably unless you have superior credentials and wasta! Once your in, after 60 they may keep you on the payroll or not...again as scot says depends on the employer and how good you are at your job..

Yes I am quoting myself Embarassed ...edit function disabled...just to clarify the meaning of 'good at your job'. It may not exactly fit within the traditional meaning of the phrase that we normally think of in the west, but rather more to do with conformity to the institution's regulations, ability to connect with the students, respectful of Islam, Saudi culture and laws, not making waves or being difficult, more along those lines.

The title of the thread is a bit misleading. Working in the ME is by contract, and when your employer chooses not to offer a contract renewal I would NOT describe that as "Mandatory Retirement". KSA and other countrioes in the region have no moral responibilty to keep renewing the contacts of the feebe and the insane !

Whe the time comes just leave - gracefully.

However, being feeble and/or insane will not necessarily exclude you from being offered a renewal either. You may even be promoted to a supervisory position. Very Happy

I felt quite good when I picked up my ESB and headed off into the Western sunset. Now, in my dotage I look back with some amusement at those 17 years in KSA - and all the years elsewhere. Africa was the best - but i was there before the AIDS epidemic and when there was still hope after getting independence. Germany was not so positive for me because of the ghosts which I could FEEL as I went about my business in Berlin (West).

KSA was okay for me - but it did NOT make me rich.

There doesn't seem to be any discussion here of the fact that the Labor Ministry wants to FORCE THOSE OVER 60 out, with certain exceptions. This has been in the local news for some time but with sketchy details. The authorities are now probably too busy rounding up the usual suspects among the laboring sectors from the subcontinent.

Guys where I work have been told they won't get new contracts due to being 59 yos. My driver is also on the boat out due to his age. He's spent 27 years here and got absolutely nothing to show for it. For sure in the summer he's gonna ask for a charitable donation.

Burger King SA is sending all its Bangladeshi employees back home. They are cleaning house too.

In any case, the Labour Ministry wants it signed into law (still pending and uncertain as far as I know) that expats can no longer stay after 60 except for certain positions that are vital for the country. EFL positions do not, of course, fall into that category, as plenty of Saudis can do that. They may get around to us after all the Untouchables are out.

The Hijgri year is shorter than the Gregorian year. This is the reason their holidays (and paydays) seem to move forward slowly from year to year. To adjust, add one to the Gregorian year for every 17 Hijgri. Example: You are 60 Gregorian. 60/17=4. So you are 64 Hijgri.
