I agree with Non Sequitur above.
FEC = Foreign Expert Certificate ... it plays an integral role in getting the "Z" visa and then moving that "Z" visa to a Residence Permit.

you're maybe thinking work permit.
you may need a foreign healthy certificate to get the work permit.
you need work permit, foreign healthy certificate (maybe), visa notification
to get the z-visa.
you need local police registration to do the in-china healthy certificate.
you need the in-china healthy certificate to get the FEC.
you need the FEC to get the RP. |

[quote="vikeologist"]Surely it looks as though he was thinking of breaking his contract, but didn't.
As for my previous dilemma, that is true.
As for the current one, yes, I've been working here without any proper documentation for about 6 months now. They actually extended my tourist visa a while back for 6 months. So I can be here a while.
My employer has 22 schools around China so I believe they can obtain a work visa for me if they wanted, but it would involve me going back to the U.S. to do so. I don't think it makes much sense for them to do this at this point. Which is why I suspect I'm getting fired. I guess there's no recourse for me to take. Thanks |

Can you explain what's suspicious about it? Does that make it seem to you that they never intended to get me the proper work visa. They said it was just until my real visa was ready |

What's suspicious about this is a legit employer usually gets the LEGAL working documents for a teacher within a reasonable time. Extending a tourist visa is great - if you are a tourist. When you are working there it sends up MANY red flags - and I don't mean the Chinese national flag.
They are outright lying to you and for what reason? |

ps - my school recently hired a new teacher. He came on a tourist visa. He has been there for 3 weeks and just went off to HK to get a Z visa - at the school's expense of course.
This is how it should be done if you have a tourist visa. Not saying that working for 3 weeks on a tourist visa is correct but it is MORE CORRECT to do it for a short time while the school processes the legal docs needed to get a z visa. |

a six-month tourist visa is not standard. they gots to ask for, and pay for,
that specifically. why would they do that? what could it mean?
it means they can string you along for six months, when they should only
need a week to get the necessary paperwork ready. |

Wow. You sure are taking some rough employment conditions.
Are you black/ Filipino?
If you are white (from anywhere in the world), then you don't need to put up with that.
Are you a troll? No one can be that.....unaware. |

Oops my email notifications were off, so I almost forgot about this thread.
So I'd like to know what people think I did wrong and what I should do to prevent this in the future? Would you say to not accept a job unless the school will provide your visa up front?
And avigoldberg, you have no idea what you're talking about. I had as plush of a job as you could expect and relatively high salary. I bet most people reading this would love my job. They just really jerked me around with the visa |

True. But I wouldn't say I regret accepting that job. True I didn't get any airfare bonus. But I made pretty easy money for 6 months and I worked there the best time of the year (Sept - April). It starts getting brutally hot in that city right about now. I just have to move on now. |

i think that was their intention.
it just doesn't work that way. you can't enter the country on a tourist visa and then switch it to a work visa while you're inside of mainland china. people used to make runs to HK to get their work visas for this very reason. but i had a coworker try this a while ago and it didn't work, so it seems like that option has been eliminated for the time being.
anyway, i highly recommend making a separate post about this school in which you name it and tell us where it is and describe in detail all the bad things that happened to you while you were there, including this. this is not a school anybody should make the mistake of working for. |

Well surprisingly they did give me 60% of my airfare bonus (for working 60% of the year) so I'm not totally down on them. They could have just stiffed me.
And I know I won't find such a plush job on my next job search. That was part luck though. The program had just started up, so I only had 6 students
But for anyone who wants to know. It was the PGA program, which has 21 schools across China. I was in Zhanjiang (of all places). It's a program that prepares students to study abroad.
Not bad salary and perks, but DON'T trust them to get your visa
as a funny aside, I found out that they already had to fire the teacher that replaced me. Haha. I guess she must have been bad, because I doubt that was part of their secret plans. So her replacement will be the 5th teacher to teach those students this school year. (First teacher was there two days and took off. Second teacher wast a filler until I arrived). I came across the job listing on echinacities and reapplied. |

well, it's good that they still paid you your airfare bonus and what not. still, making you work without the proper documents is unforgivable.
what are your plans now? |
