I have just watched this video on the BBC, and even though it is from November 2012, it's quite interesting Meet the 'tutor kings and queens'

Doesn't look too good for "ugly" tutors in HK, does it?! However, can other countries such as the UK and America learn from cultures obsessed by doing well in school (HK, South Korea etc)?

I know it seems a bit excessive but maybe if there was a balance I think it could be good. I would like to have been brought up with much more of an emphasis placed on this kind of thing to have done better in school, even if I was somewhat forced to do it.

It seems Hong Kong educational system is influenced by �Confucian values�.
The student must obey and respect his teacher without questions or challenge!

Look at the video again. It's a system that breeds losers. 80% fail - i.e. don't make uni, and the whole system is geared for that - it certainly isn't geared to equip students for life skills.

So if you want the same values and same insane competition, just fail 80% of the students. Next, create a society which is obsessed with face and name (including university names), where your station in life is decided at 18 years of age. Then you'll get a lot of super-motivated students, and with the added national pride of having so many kids who are world champions at test taking (just look at the PISA scores).

Finally, walk out of the streets and see how miserable everyone looks and the total lack of joy in everyone's face - every last hue of joy drained from every last face at about the age of 12 - when the kids enter high school.

Then ask yourself if this is the price you want to pay for getting a bunch of good test scores.
