I just found out that Suzhou now requires a criminal record check for the visa. This policy just started last week.

During the course of my recent enquiries / applications for a new position for next year, I was told by an international school that Guangdong authorities now require criminal background checks for teachers intending to work at primary & secondary schools.

It didn't bother me, but I did suspect that it was a school requirement rather than an official requirement. Maybe I was wrong!

How does a person obtain this? (already in China)

Is this for visas or RPs? I'm transferring to a uni in Suzhou; last week the FAO asked if I had a criminal record check, I said no, that seemed to be the end of the conversation. To the best of my knowledge, for Americans, it takes 6 months to get one of these overseas.

It seems to be for new teachers who are coming from outside of China. My visa is getting renewed next week and I was not asked to provide these records.

I can confirm this, appears to be needed by first arrivals or those who've worked in China before but are coming back.

Info. from my uni in SIP:

What you need: "non-criminal certificate"
The "non-criminal certificate" should from your nationality country
Normally, you can get the certificate from police station
The certificate should be a letter to say that you have no record in the criminal system
If your most currently working place is China, and your residece permit visa is still vaild, you may not need to provide this certificate anymore

My mom got it from the main police station in my hometown, where she was allowed to check a box to "represent" me, cost $12.

It's called an "Application for Release of Local Summary Criminal History Application".

You can get info. about it online.

The FBI criminal background check, which takes 6-8 weeks to get, doesn't appear to be needed, at least for now.
