In a previous thread about a notorious language school called Speak Up I read that their hourly rate was �9 per hour. I really didn't think it could go any lower, but take a look at this ad from gumtree:
Contract type
Permanent
Pay: �8.50/hr
Hours: 10hrs-40hrs a week (Part-time or Full-time). Evenings required (6.30pm-8.30pm)
Location: Whitechapel, East London
Number of Vacancies: 2
Description: No previous experience or qualifications required although the applicant must speak
English as their first language and be friendly, dynamic, presentable and
articulate. An interest in language and grammar is expected. Training will be given to
the right candidates as the college utilises a prescribed method of teaching English.
Training generally lasts a week. The successful candidate will be teaching English to
adult learners mainly from Spain, Brazil and Italy. A good grasp of grammar is an
advantage. Experienced teachers are welcome to apply, especially if you have
experience in teaching IELTS or F.C.E.

Yes, this school are paying their poor teachers an insulting �8.50 an hour to teach "adult learners mainly from Spain, Brazil and Italy". I wonder how many "experienced teachers" will apply? |

Here's another language school masquerading as a university who are paying their DELTA teachers a poxy �14.48 per hour:
English Language Tutor
Harper Adams University College
(�14.48-�15.81 per hour)
The post involves working as part of a busy team teaching on the pre-sessional course for international postgraduate students, and term-time, supporting a range of international students with their academic courses and language development. You will hold a first degree and the Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults (DELTA).

Harper Adams University College was granted university status in 2012 and according to the Sunday Times survey was placed in the top 50 of all universities in the UK. It is in the top 3 for graduate employment.
This could be because it only focuses on agriculture and the agri-food chain and rural sector. It is situated in rural Shropshire, near to Edgmond, Newport.
One can only presume that potential employees would live locally or have to be offered accommodation. I totally agree that this is a shockingly low rate of pay, and I sincerely hope nobody with a DELTA is tempted to apply. |

No doubt that potato picking would pay better. Maybe I should go back to university and get Ph.d in Potatolgy. It certainly offers a brighter future than ESL in this country. |

I too was checking out this website tonight and found this ad by a corporate outfit called INTO University Partnerships:
Presessional English Teachers
INTO University of East Anglia London
Into offers a range of programmes from pre-university to postgraduate level recruited via our global network. The London Centre is also home to a joint venture with City University London and the Norwich Business School London base.
We currently have vacancies for Presessional English Teachers on our 12, 8 and 4- week intakes, which run between 24th June and 13th September 2013. Teachers must be available to teach for the whole of the period for which they are employed. In addition, there will be a one-day paid induction during the week commencing 17th June. We regret that we cannot offer accommodation for this period.
Requirements
Candidates should possess:
A recognised TEFL qualification, ideally at diploma and/or Master�s level (e.g. DELTA, MA in ELT and Applied Linguistics)
Previous experience teaching EAP and/or preparing international students for higher education
Previous presessional teaching will be a distinct advantage
Salary: �29,131 (pro rata) plus 30 days holiday (pro rata).
Teachers on a full time contract are expected to work 37.5 hours week on site, 20 of which will be teaching hours, and to undertake additional tasks as necessary, such as attendance at meetings, tutorials, marking and cover teaching.

They are paying �29,131 per annum, which actually looks quite respectable until you do the maths: 29131/12 = 2428/4 = 607/37.5 = �16.12 per hour.(It'd work out less once you factor in the "additional tasks".) And like other schools, they're asking for a DELTA/MA and previous experience teaching EAP. Shocking. They'd be lucky to get an applicant with a CSE in English for that rate let alone anyone qualified. |

The sad fact is that they will probably be swamped with applicants.
Let's just put this into perspective. A junior hospital doctor in year 1, working on average 56 hours per week or up to 72 hours on call, often in life and death situations, earns 22,412 GB pounds per annum. By year 2, a junior doctor can get 27,788 GB pounds, and by year 3, when undergoing specialist training, hits the dizzy heights of 29,705 GB pounds.
I know because my son is a junior doctor in London. |
