[Haven't cracked 210k for 3 months in a row at NOVA.]

Are you in Tokyo or in another part of the country? Are you full time or part time? [/quote]

40 min from Tokyo

Contracted for 37 lessons a week. This is not considered full-time to banks because I'm a contractor where Nova has no obligation to provide me with 37 lessons each week.

This shouldn't surprise you. There are others that take a second job because they don't make enough.

Thirty-seven lessons a week for 210,000 yen. What does that work out to, 1,400/hr. before taxes?

I'll keep that number in mind the next time anyone asks me about coming to teach English in Japan.

Yeah, that's how much I averaged an hour at Seiha and Interac. It's really not worth it, imho.
Which is why when I worked for Interac, I ducked out early. They can't expect people to hang around all day at school for little pay. So, I rolled out early I did PT work after school.

I have a hard time trying to imagine what would keep me in Japan if I was only earning 1,400/hr. before taxes.

Not much. Waited for my wife to finish her masters then rolled out. Really not worth it. Especially with 4 months a year with pay cuts

I'm roughly 15 USD per hour. My last job at a convenience store in America paid 8.50 USD, so it's an improvement, but not what someone with a BA should be getting.

That sucks. If you learn a little about linguistics and theories of language acquisition, and if you adopt a professional, high-end manner, it's perfectly possible to make 6000/hour in private 1-to1's. The turning point for me came when I grew a moustache :-{). It made me look about 10 years older, which counts for something in Japan, and that gave me the courage to reinvent myself as a "language learning coach".

(Sits back, and waits for people to tell him that a mere 6000 is for suckers...)

I still work add an ALT, but only because I'm too busy working on my MSc to concentrate on developing my private classes.

I'm not too concerned about it. My plan at the moment is to work toward teaching certification back in the states, so Japan will be like an extended student teaching course.

If you don't mind:

What's the most you have earned in a month and how long had you been there, when was it, and how many hours did you work?

What's the least you have earned in a month and how long had you been there, when was it, and how many hours did you work?

How much do you pay a month in housing costs?

How much do you normally save?

What city do you work in?

Do they treat you well?

That seems like a better deal at first glance. However, given the cost of living in Japan vs. most areas in the U.S., I'm not sure $15/hr. in Japan is all that much better than $8.50/hr. in the States. If you're planning to rotate out of Japan soon, then it's probably no big deal to ride it out. However, as noted above, it seems to me anyone who has been here a while and is still only earning 1,400/hr. is doing something wrong.

I bet that $8.50/hr job didn't offer health insurance....
