I've been approached by these two universities and would like to know if anyone worked for them? Experiences? Good, or bad? I am complete noob straight out of university, so any advice would be great! Smile

Thanks guys!

P.S. Hunan Agricultural University has emailed 3 times and they seem quite adamant to hire me, I don't know if this is a good thing or not. Am I right to think that universities that are desperate to hire are usually bad universities to work for? I didn't even email them my information as apparently they got them through another university (that I did send my details to).

Also, Xiangtans FAO has really bad English and seems to want to hire me without a skype interview.

Nothing you wrote above is a red flag. For example lots of schools FAOs write in less than stellar English but the schools may still be good places to work. In one of your other threads you said it felt like a million years since you applied but heard nothing. Now you're getting your replies. Ask questions, get answers then accept or don't accept.

Both aren't terrible schools. I lived in Changsha and have visited Hunan Agriculture Uni, the only thing is that it is in the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE. If you wanna go from there to civilization in Changsha is is more than an hours trip. Super inconvenient.

Xiangtan University is a good school though. But I haven't worked for either one and sometimes you go to a good school and get treated like crap. I would ask the schools to put you in contact with former/current teachers to see what it's like and to make sure to let them give you exactly how it is with no BS. I'll never forget when looking at one school and the current "teacher" straight up told me that the school is a perfect utopia and he has never had one single negative thought there.........uh.........yeah ok

Any thoughts on Xiangtan University from FT's who've worked there recently? I taught there and my experience was great. It was that backwards arse city of Xiangtan that sent me fleeing from the place. Feeling a little nostalgic now and pondering a return. But I'm afraid the old adage "You can't got back" may apply here. My last year at Xiang Da was the last year I thoroughly enjoyed teaching English. I read some horror stories about the place though on another thread on Dave's. I dealt with the person someone referred to as "Lanny", that would be Miss Li. I never had any problems with her, but other people called her The Dragon Lady.

Not totally relevant but I worked in Xiangtan (Hunan University of Technology - Ke Da, just up or down(?) the road from Xiang Da) in 2011-2012.

I too loved the job, but it had no career/future. I've been back to Xiangtan a few times, most recently in May this year, and it's really developed. I actually liked the city, trust me, there are far worse in China!

I met the infamous Lanny once. My former colleague used the phrase 'wouldn't touch her with a 10 foot barge pole, she was out for herself. I remember she invited me to a 'foreigner party' or something like that It wasn't. It was a promotion for a business she had. No 'party'. We were given a square of tiramisu!

Thanks! That sounds about right from what "Lanny's'" detractors usually said about her. Glad I never got on her bad side.

I remember Ke Da, went there a few times and knew some of the FTs there. Glad to hear the city is getting better. It got to the point in my last two years there that I dreaded leaving the campus to go into town.
