I'm not sure if that has already been addressed recently, but I'm kind of confused about the visa requirements if I want to work in HK. I spoke to a private language school and they told me that in order to get my visa, I need to have 5 A-C GCSE's including English, maths and science. I haven't heard this from anyone before, is this true?
I am fully qualified, with a B.A & M.A in English, CELTA, and a few ESL teaching years experience. That's not the issue! I'm just a little confused about the exact entry requirements for working in HK. Also, had a look at the website, http://www.gov.hk/en/nonresidents/workinghk/employment/, am I applying for the work permit to work as a professional? Argh the whole thing is confusing!! |

Whoever gave you that information about the A C levels is totally clueless; I mean, TOTALLY. Bloody. Clueless. I've heard a few stories about people getting visas with just a CELTA, but they are few, far between, and unverified by me. The generally accepted minimum for a teacher would be a bachelor's degree (in any discipline) for a tutorial centre position, and that or BEd/ PGCE/ CELTA/ equivalent for a primary or secondary school one (that can be relaxed a bit for primary NETs if there's a shortage that year).
Someone with your qualifications does not even have to consider working for an outfit with So Little Idea even in your nightmares.
And don't worry about the visa application, either. That is your employer's responsibility, not yours. Yes, it would be a professional. You cannot apply for this independently. |
