I have 2 masters, one in social research and the other in buddhist studies. Given the religious climate in saudi arabia, would the MA in buddhist studies hurt my application? Would it be best to just leave it out of my resume completely?

Thanks.

Leave it off your CV/resume; it's not relevant. But then, neither is your other master's degree. Hopefully, you have a CELTA or equivalent TEFL cert and some teaching experience under your belt.

I agree it is best to leave irrelevant items off your resume especially for Saudi Arabia. I don't know if they will care about Buddhist studies or not, but they will likely bother you about the authenticity of the degree and it could delay things. They are pretty weird about stuff like that.

Thanks for your replies. Ok, im leaving it off.
I don't have any tefl certification, but I have a lot of university experience teaching english. I'm just hoping that's enough to slip into a university job in Saudi Arabia somehow.

Unfortunately, without a TEFL cert and/or a relevant degree, the only slipping in will be your CV right into the recycle bin for deletion. Employers expect to see a proper teaching qualification (e.g., a CELTA or equivalent cert) as proof you've received supervised teacher training. Read those job ads carefully.

I have known teachers with relevant doctorates who were asked to get a CELTA before being signed up. It could be equivalent certificate but one of those online certs will not satisfy employers.

You can do the CELTA or TESOL in a month. Its not a big deal. Why let that stop you?

OP I'm in the same boat. I have an MA in Religious Studies. Just out of interest, at which university did you do your degree?

In hindsight I see my adventures in Religious Studies in my 20s as a monumental waste of time/ If I could do it again I'd invest in postgraduate studies in TESOL.

My plan is to go to Saudi, too. I'm about to get a Trinity Cert to make this happen. Good luck

Lancaster and Sunderland would be my guesses for the two posters with Master's in Religious Studies/Buddhist Studies.

With some jobs in Saudi Arabia they will not like these type of degrees while at others they won't care. Pot luck.

I have an MA in TEFL from a seminary. Even though it is now referred to as a University, might it be a problem?

I don't think so, especially if it says 'university' on your documents.

Most employers won't be so picky..
