No surprise some schools don't trust laowai teachers when they have people who are prepared to bolt for no good reason. This is probably where some of the really stupid clauses in contracts come from, curfews, no visitors in school owned flats, probation periods.

Haha...no, the stupid clauses about curfews and visitors is because the laowai before you was banging students, THEN bolted! |

Wow...reading comprehension...ummm...
The OP stated he would get his full pay, airfare, etc. BEFORE the end of the term. His "moral dilemma" is whether to take his full pay and ditch the school early because they disrespected him by sending him a text message. Sigh.
In his words, "Professionalism is on the decline..." Yeah right, kettle. I kind of understand why they are letting him go. |
Insult the other guy for his lack of reading comprehension yet you do the same. The text message is just ONE example.......and if you actually read, you'd see I was already planning on leaving anyway, so getting "let go" doesn't matter to me at all since I already have plans and works in progress Stateside.
This school has had no communication the whole year, no text books for classes, the FAO went MIA the first month of school and i've only met her TWICE and never told us she was gone until the end of the first term.......the SECOND FAO that replaced her has done the same, none of the department leaders offer any communication and i've never even seen them, my apartment is the ONLY apartment to be completely barebones and hasn't been renovated whereas all the other foreign teachers apartments were basically fully stocked with furniture, kitchen stuff, everything and I had to buy all my own stuff. I had no AC, Washing Machine for the first few weeks and I was sleeping on the floor on a pallet for the first month.
Sorry but the TEXT message is just kinda the final middle finger and now i'm in the position to give them one back.
as far as the students go....even though this is a better school, the students are basically brain dead zombies. If they were halfway decent I wouldn't want to screw them over, but they've been unwelcoming and useless since day one, so I don't feel bad.
If you want people to act like a professional, you have to treat them like a professional. If you treat them as a nuisance and ignore them and make their lives miserable while providing no support, then you're not gonna stay professional very long, I don't care who you are. |

OP,
Do not listen to the person telling you not to ruin it for the next guy. S/he is just being selfish and self-centered. Do not worry about your students. They'll be fine. Look after yourself. If you don't, no one else here will. China is the law of the jungle and nothing you do or say to help the next guy or or students will change that.
And follow your intuition. If you think they're going to screw you on your final salary and airfare, walk.
Also, the suggestion to hold on to your final grades until your final salary is paid is excellent advice. I had to do the same thing with one college that was getting stupid with me. Once the salary was received I submitted all of my grades. |
The back story to withholding grades is to make sure you have finished the testing 2 weeks before end of semester. If you ask the question about final pay, airfare and release letter the day before you are flying out, your leverage is minimal.
Let your top 4/5 students in each class know their grades informally and tell them there may be a delay in the numbers being loaded onto the school webpage or however they promulgate these things to students.
This sets up a bit of pressure from the other side. |

After all the s*** you put up with, I would of left (and actually did) within the first few weeks. Life's too short to put up with nonsense like that. |
