I guess nothing should surprise me by now when dealing with Mexican "efficiency" but it seems as though the major, private uni that I will be working at starting August doesn't know how (or at least the department I'll be with doesn't) to go about the visa process for hiring a foreigner like me who isn't in the country yet.

I imagine sooner or later they will figure it out but to speed up the process I want to direct them to a website that will walk them through it step by step on getting authorization.

What is the best site for that?

They can also find the phone number of the nearest INM office on that site and phone if they'd rather do it that way. (I recommend phoning, they might get referred back to the website, but each office intrepretes the rules a little bit so it's best to talk to the people you will actually be dealing with).

If you go to the Mexican immigration office they will give you a printout of all the steps to give to your employer.

Your uni has to register with INM (if they've never done that before), and then provide a list of all employees to INM so they can check the ratio of Mexicans to foreigners. That takes about 60 days and once authorized, they can make an offer to a foreign employee. That employee then files their paperwork at a consulate outside Mexico and then visits INM in Mexico to finish the process.

The whole thing now takes a minimum of 3 months to do for schools doing this the first time...

Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately, I don't get an email when someone posts even though I have the right box checked to get one.

After months and months of waiting I finally got my signed offer from the university I'm to work at starting August.

I hear from the key parties at the school about once a month and each time there is a baby step forward.

I have no idea if they got the INM approval. I heard from him only 10 days ago so I'm at least 20 days away from my next contact no matter how many emails I send.

I doubt my visa will be done on time if I don't lead the charge. I went to the gov site where you can do it yourself but language barriers will probably result in my taking a wrong step and then having to do the thing all over again.

Is there a visa agent of some type you recommend to help with these matters.

I'm still in China and wanting to get there before the end of July, work Visa in hand. If I leave it up to the school is likely to be done by July 2014, not 2013.
