The company that hired me took 200000 of it right away, leaving the rest for start up costs (a futon, laundry supplies, LP deposit) food, cell phone, utilities, gasoline if you commute, school lunch bills, and the basically mandatory welcome enkai. I brought 500000 with me, so I had a cushion, but if I only had 3 I would have been screwed.

I have never heard of that happening. Why did they and why would you let them?

Yeah, never let a company set you up with a place. Just get a location, as they do skim some off of you. I have seen people's rent at Leo Palace, and then looked up the price on yahoo, and they were almost always paying 5000 more a month. Plus they always had paid more down for key money.

It's a scam really

For my situaton, the best move was taking what they gave me. I don't speak enough to hunt down a place and utilities on my own.

From what I've seen you usually don't pay key money if an English teaching company sets you up with an apartment. Unless you're talking about a company that just owns apartments.

I didn't have key money, they just wanted three months rent in advance plus deposit.

Ah, ok. But for the most part, when Interact or an Eikaiwa sets you up in a Leo, you are getting the shaft.

And some places charge you with a cleaning charge when you move out.
