Dear Sasha,

You do realize, I hope, that the stuff about "changing" was a quote from the OP.

Having reached the age of 70 and having gone through many physical changes, especially in the last five years or so, I am, believe me, quite well aware that not all change is for the better.

As my dear sister (who is seven years older than I) was kind enough to inform me on my sixty-fifth birthday, "Happy Birthday - now, you start falling apart." Very Happy

Regards,
Old John

Dear future,

This message is for users of eslcafe.com, who just so happen to be looking back on this thread in a thousand years. You are probably studying this very peculiar language we are using to communicate, thinking how archaic and strange our syntax and word choice is. On behalf of myself and all my peers, I apologise for our attempt to somehow pin down our 'grammatically perfect' English as it stands.

The grammar of English has never changed and never will do again, as you, my future brethren, know.

Lots of love,

BlueMango and his fellow eslcafelers.

Dear John:

I was laughing at your description. Here's a job advert for such teachers:

Skills/Qualifications Required
CELTA, equivalent, or ability to accurately throw and catch beanbag.
Priority given to candidates with related MA or proven guitar-playing and singing skills.

Seems to be the case in some circumstances!

Dear Johnslat

I do hope you realise what an effort it was for me to hit any keys at all when I was writing that previous offering. Surprisingly hard to choose the right key every time from a choice of just two, for every letter hic!

Dear Kent,

"I take pride in being a well-rounded ESL teacher."

Been putting on the pounds, huh? Well, remember: A waist is a terrible thing to mind. Very Happy

Hi John!

We're straying off-topic here but it's so much fun. Shocked

And speaking of off-topic, you'll never guess who I spent a recent afternoon with, shopping for socks and hunting for a Dunkin' Donuts in a huge mall that neither of us knew our way around in. If you guess the right answer, I'll tell you my waistline measurements. Hint: think Terminator or Dirty Harry. So, do ya feel lucky, punk? Well, do ya?

Gosh, I don't know. Give me some time to think about it. Is it someone we both know (know, not know of)?

Regards,
John

^ Indeed, he is a well known figure here on Dave's.

Sorry for the two edits above. I couldn't decide between the Terminator and Dirty Harry. Laughing

Ok, no more hints.

Take your best shot.

No need to be MODest, John. Mr. K is doing fine!

And now for the moment you've all been wai(s)ting for. Drum roll please ...

31 or 32 inches, depending on how much beer I've drunk when you measure it.

Not bad for an old-timer, eh? Mr. Green

Dear Kent,

Wow - pretty good. At 70, I'm still a 32 - have been for many years.

Too bad, though, that you're only 3 feet tall. Very Happy

Regards,
John

^ Ha!

You must have been measuring another part of my anatomy. Mr. Green

Now tell me, how did we get from lightening up on grammar ... to this?

Ah yes, I remember. It was spiral78's fault for the beanbag / guitar remarks. Laughing
