You wouldn't. Obviously. Logically therefore, if plenty of us are dealing with Aramco contractors that gives you a clue doesn't it. Let me spell it out: you canNOT deal directly with that particular employer unless you are exceptionally fortunate.

... and was one of them an Aramco position in the last five years? If so, good for you. But if so, you snapped up one rare deal there. Direct hire simply isn't common anymore. And guess what, the vast majority of contracted Aramco teachers "have not had any problems" with their contractors.

right... glad we got that out in the open. Like Scot, when asked to provide evidence of Aramco contractors screwing people over, we hear nothing in response. |

It appears that you have headed off topic sicklyman. This isn't an ARAMCO thread...

| I'm direct hire, but I work with many teachers who are not. They are contracted through SBC, Edex, and IGIT. Some are happy, some are not. Some were offered direct hire for the next school year. Some accepted, some decided to stay put. My advice to those contemplating a move to KSA: pay less attention to those on this board who haven't lived here for years and more to those on the ground. Things change. |

Only those with 10000+ posts are permitted to go off-topic, sicklyman. Get with the program. |

Tell me what has changed since June 2011 when I left ? Have contractors suddenly been transformed into philanthropists ?
As I look out my window I see squadrons of RSAF Flying Pigs go past in tight formation. |

Exactly.
But the problem here was that his response using ARAMCO specifics made no sense in relation to cmp's post which wasn't talking about ARAMCO. At first I though his post had plopped onto the wrong thread (which happens) and had to go back to page one to check. Only a minority of posters here or teachers in Saudi are working or applying at that specific employer.

(I hope that RSAF isn't planning to try to sell any of those new planes to the Saudi Air Force) |

Dear VS,
Well, why not? Look at all the money they'd save by not having to change the lettering: RSAF.
Regards,

ooooh... that's my wrist slapped. I wasn't aware that references to Aramco could only be made in an "ARAMCO thread"... whatever that is.
Actually veiled, the OP was asking about which contractors to go with. Going direct was recommended along with the sweeping statement that they "are all crappy." To me, that seems off topic but hey, I've only been on Dave's for a decade; what would I know?
To illustrate that a) going direct might not be possible and b) that they are not "all crappy" I used Aramco as an example. My example also illustrates why getting hard and fast opinions on particular contractors may not be a guarantee of job security.

Why so defensive Scot? Did I mention your name? I will say though that you are guilty of occasionally going off topic, with nary a slap on the wrist from the unofficial moderators here.
And yes, two years can make a difference anywhere, for better or worse, even in KSA. |

Dear intrepid traveler,
" I will say though that you are guilty of occasionally going off topic, . . ."
You mean there are threads on this (or any other forum) that actually stay on topic?
Who knew?

We're all educated adults here, so there's nothing wrong in being open to info, advice, comments, rantings, etc., from all sources---each provides its own positive and/or negative values. The key is in how we, as individuals, evaluate both the credibility of the messenger and the quality and validity of the message based on our own unique experiences, backgrounds, needs, and goals. In other words, using critical thinking in order to make informed decisions specific to us and to others impacted by our choices---having free will and being personally accountable.
I didn't become a member of Dave's until right before starting my first teaching job. Like others, I'd read the forums for information that would give me a better handle on where I wanted to teach. I wanted to know the good, bad, and the ugly. I also looked at non-teaching forums, blogs, wikipedia, and travel sites as well as TEFL-related articles from various sources. Yet, here on the Mid East forums, the members who provided me the most (indirect) guidance were the veterans and seasoned teachers: Johnslat, VS, Sheikher, Scot47, Cleopatra, Mia Xanthi, and others. I gained insight into history, culture, and of course, solid practical info (they aren't into sugar-coating and providing superficial fluff). They still don't focus on themselves but rather, the ups and downs of TEFL and life in this region---reality. They continue to make me think (and sometimes laugh).
And now here I am, a regular contributor seeking not only a healthy exchange of ideas and information but also a chance to help others looking for guidance as well. Additionally, like many others, including the veterans, I've maintained steady friendships with teachers in various parts of the Middle East, Asia, and Europe. We still network and pass along valuable information about employers and job situations.
Anyway, I hope that umteen years from now, my own continuing contributions to these forums won't be easily dismissed as outdated or irrelevant simply because I'd moved to another country or am doing something different in my life. We all have something of offer; what you make of it is up to you. |

I missed Cleopatra, Mia, Queen of Sheeba, and King Cobra. I hope they are alive and doing well. |
