You will find all kinds of men in Mexico from the most extreme Macho to someone who you couldn't say is macho at all. I don't think they are any worse than other Latin Americans. |

Ive been dating here a little bit and Ive not found one man who fits the stereotype by a long shot. But I really doubt Id stay in the presence of one (regardless of nationality) too long.
I have found, in general, that the men Ive met are a bit more forward than what I was used to back home. But that, is not a bad thing. I know exactly what is on their minds. I dont have to guess all the time like I did with my ex-husband. (I know, men usually complain about women in this way)
They are also more polite, in the traditional way. Opening doors, walking between the woman and the street etc. Cant say Im entirely comfortable with it but I dont think this is necessarily bad either. |

Someone told me an interesting "story" about this once, I don't believe it myself but it puts a different twist on the practice!
Nowadays, most people think its the custom for men to walk next to the traffic and women next to the buildings because the men are proctecting women from the dangers of possibly getting hit by a car. But actually this practice has the same origins as using the word "Aguas!" to mean look out. Back in the olden days, before the advent of the WC, people used camber pots and it was normal practice to empty the camber pot out the window. You'd shout "Aguas!" to warn passerbyers on the street of what was about to come down from above. In these days, bathing and washing your clothes was also much more of an ordeal than it is now, so men, being of course more important than women, would not walk right next to the building because they didn't want to put themselves at risk for getting a chamber pot dumped on their heads! |

MELEE - close but not completely accurate. It is true that the side of a woman a man walks on in the Middle Ages was determined by the emptying of chamberpots. However, at that time such a danger decreed that the man walk between the woman and the building, not the street. He would be more likely to be hit that way.
The current one of next to the street might be to prevent a woman by being hit by a car, but most likely it is to get the brunt of any water or debris kicked up by a passing car. |

When I was in Mexico in a small town, a guy walked towards the street side because he said if I was walking on the outside it would appear I was a prostitute instead of a girlfriend or friend of my male companion. I thought it was a thoughtful thing to do, knowing what it meant. It was not something I was aware of. But, every town may be different. This was in the central area of Mexico. |

I wonder if some of that isn't more culture in general rather than macho. I've observed that in this culture distance of personal space and the acceptance of casual touching have different boundaries than in my "home culture." I've also noticed that in local culture it seems acceptable to ask certain types of rather direct and personal questions shortly after meeting someone. I think these things could come across as being forward if one isn't used to them. |

In England, it's traditional for the men to walk by the road and the woman to walk on the inside because the first floor (2nd floor for Americans) used to jut out further than the rest of the house - streets were narrow and building up and out made more room in a time where we didn't have articulated lorries. Thus, when someone threw their chamberpot out, it would drench only the person walking nearest the road... God forbit that be a woman!
I have a strong suspicion that this is not the reason for Mexican men to walk on the outside though! I have heard about the prostitute walking near the road thing a lot before and that sounds more plausible to me! |
