| Lots of thoughtful answers that show that, while the system may be the same throughout China, individual schools and individual students vary. Bottom line for me, dirt guy, is that if you feel some students helped you out, there's nothing wrong with thanking them. They don't necessarily have to be the monitors. A small treat or some time together such as at dinner or lunch is fine. |

The English major classes already have class monitors. My gen ed classes (the enormous ones) do not. For the gen eds, I just choose the student who participates the most and is the most knowledgeable in the class.
I have never given any specific thank you gifts to class monitors because I already spend time with them outside of class treating them to meals no matter how hard they try to pay for it themselves. |

How bit are your big classes (Gen Ed)?

DG, Number one, get the ipod back. If you do not report it to the dean, and/or tell the whole class he/she is a thief
I would not treat them just a "thank you" is enough and perhaps a good word to the dean. Oh, that is useless most likely.
If you want, take them out to lunch if u feel they were very helpful to you.
Certainly do not invite the thief.
I know this answer does not help you, but my advise if for you to do what you feel in your heart is the best. |

I appreciate everyone's help here and have decided to simply talk to the person in charge of the monitors. I'm going to tell him that 4 of the monitors did their jobs well, etc. As for the thief, we have one class left before finals. I told him if he doesn't bring the i_Pod, he doesn't take the final. Don't know if that is OK or not but I guess I'll find out. I'm also going to have a sit down with his boss regarding his actions.
Some of these chronological "adults" are really immature and that is one of the discoveries that has surprised me the most.
Thanks again to everyone.

Still think you should give the 4 a little trinket of thanks. Something cheap from one of those Chinese gift stores like Kawaii (don't think I spelled it right). |

Assuming it's a half decent ipod that's 800RMB+
Why are you messing around? Not taking an exam? PU-LEASE.
Whenever you have time[maybe tomorrow?] go to your boss and TELL HER/HIM the student hasn't returned, and that you want it back.
He'll call the student and it'll be sorted within 1 hour. |

Well, it worked. The "test" I threatened to not allow the flaky monitor to take is the final and anyone who doesn't take the final automatically flunks. Got everything I needed back. I still went and had a sit down with his boss and found out I am not the only teacher who complained.
As for the other monitors, I told their boss that they had done their jobs well and I was quite satisfied with their work. I may offer each of them to write a letter of recommendation if they want such a thing.

My class monitor would spend the entire time texting while I'm trying to get the students not to. Also, informed me the parents were going to watch my class on 5 minutes notice. The other monitor wrote me a scathing review and I hadn't even started teaching yet.
Thanks class monitors, your the best! |

You are the teacher and they are the students. You run the class. I could just imagine if the professor at my college was told you have a monitor and let he/she do things for you. Wait, they do have them they are called TA,but the professor picks them. |

| I have a TA and sometimes she comes in the class to "assist" and see what we are doing. The other day she fell asleep in the classroom. It was kinda funny to watch her doing that nodding out - almost falling over thing - over and over again. |
