I also got my first sample contract with NUDT. I have no problem with the strict curfew/visitor stuff, but I do have a couple of other concerns. Any feedback would be appreciated!
1. My sample includes a one month probation period. I've been teaching in the states for 11 years, so it isn't my teaching ability that concerns me. It's the fact that if they don't like me they can kick me out with no reimbursement. If the school year has started, getting another job would be next to impossible, right?
Handing over my passport to the local police etc. Sounds like a bad idea, but does this happen to everyone? Also, how much is the residence permit, since this contract says I pay for it.
Finally even though it says generally 12-18 classroom hours per week, is it safe to assume that "generally" means "expect more?" |

NUDT = National University of Defense Technology in Hunan.
Never heard of anyone having to pay for their own residence permit.
Your passport should not be kept by the police, it should just be used to process your residence permit. |

I'm so new at this, so I may be reading things wrong.
"12. Party B will cover all the expenses for visas." Is the residence permit not a visa?
So the "handed in to the local police" is just so they can check it and it's given back?
I don't mean to sound stupid, I just want to make sure I do things right. lol |

The school should sponsor your Z work visa that allows you to travel to China. The school provides the necessary documents to be given to a Chinese embassy or consulate in your home country.
The costs of that visa in your home country is paid by you.
The Z visa is then changed to a residency permit after you arrive in China and it allows you to stay and work in China for up to a year. The school typically pays for the RP.
Your passport should be given back to you after the residency permit is put inside your passport. |

Also the one month probation period is fairly common. I have such a clause in my contract, and it stays in each year, so when I renew I still have the probation month. To be honest you'd have to be pretty bad to be let go after a month, and if they were going to use it to get rid of you for other reasons, they would do so without that clause anyway.
Do they pay you the full rate for that month? Some language mills use the first month probation thing to cheat you out of some of your money by paying a lower rate. Of course, if you do a great job from day one they never offer to pay you the difference. |

there is nothing in the sample contract they sent me that says the pay is different for that first month. Most of this contract looks just like what I have been seeing you all deal with when reading your posts. The things I originally posted were things that I wanted your opinion on to see if they were fairly standard or a red flag. |

You should negotiate this item AND ask for a detailed listing of expenses directly related to it.
To avoid an unpleasant deduction in your wages. |

Thank you. This is exactly why I came onto this site when a professor I had at University told me about it. |
