Howdy --
I'm flying into Ho Chi Minh City and then taking a connecting flight to Vinh City in August.
Do you have any tips on getting a tourist visa? Should I go with an agency or deal directly with the embassy?
What inoculations should I get (if any)?
Thank you!

If you want to do the backpack/teach approach to Vietnam I'd suggest you take your questions to www.tripadvisor.com regarding visas to Vietnam. Enjoy living by the skin of your teeth and please don't come moaning here when you get messed around.
If you decide to get some kind of qualifications to teach and intend getting a work permit then please look through the board for more information.
By the way I'm not really sure what attracts you to Vinh city. I don't think there are many teachers there so that might be your saving grace. Good luck maintaining tourist visa renewals if you don't have any qualifications! |

Is there anything EVEN IN Vinh??
I've never been there before.....NOBODY I EVEN KNOW has ever been there before......
All I've heard about it is that it's an industrial s---hole that provides a good jumping off point to go to Lao, and thass it!!
But like Ben E states - it very well may work to your advantage that there is nobody in Vinh (meaning: NO Tay, or Westerners) in that you've got job security and that the school will arrange to have your visa renewed in-country, calling upon the "good relationships" they have in town to perform such a task.
It'll prolly be not much fun and quite boring. |

I've met a few volunteer teachers from Vinh. They described it as some sort of tourist destination for Vietnamese tourists. It has something to do with Ho Chi Minh living there for a time. |

Nothing is required as far as I know but you might want to consider Hepatitis B. Unfortunately it takes 3 shots over a period of time.

This poster is always cryptic and sometimes humorous. I assume he is alluding to the idea that you have a particular companion awaiting you. She can help with the follow up shots and hopefully the job search and relations with the local bureaucracy.

My wife read this thread over my shoulder and immediately said "That is Ho Chi Minh city." When I looked confused she told me that is where he was born, as in Ho Chi Minh's city. When you teach here you will learn about pronunciation problems with apostrophe S. Apparently he was actually born in the adjacent district but close enough.

Your qualifications have been fairly thoroughly hashed out on the last thread you posted so I won't go into that here. I would caution you to read the sticky thread titled "Here's what you need to bring to work in Vietnam." The document authentications and the criminal records check take time so you need to move quickly to get it done before August. |
