Hi All,
I am new to this and I hoping to get as much help as possible. I currently looking for a teaching position in Thailand starting around October. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Relations with a minor in Philosophy. I am currently finishing my TESOL certification. I have been teaching kids how to swim for the past 10 years, so I have a lot of teaching experience, but not in the classroom setting.
I'm not too picky about where I want to be located, but I was interested in maybe the northern areas, close to Chaing Mai. I could also do a little south too. I want to be able to save some money, but it doesn't have to be a ton.
Where should I focus my direction??
Also, do I need to get any shots before I leave for Thailand??
I have read a lot of the other posts on here and have had most of my questions answered these are just a few lingering ones I can't seem to find.
Any suggestions will help.
I was also wondering if I would be able to find people/places that need swim lessons to make some extra money on the side. I am very good at what I do and I think it's a valuable skill I have to share. Anyone know of anything like this?
Thanks for your help!

The closer you get to Chaing Mai the harder it will be to get a decent job; several TEFL schools crank out lots of wanna-be teachers all year long so competition is high and pay is low.
You won't "save" anything in your first year. If you are lucky you will break even (your savings will equal your setup costs).
If you haven't had them already, shots for Hep A and B. Hep is endemic in Asia and the shots, depending on which serum your doctor uses, can take from 2 to 6 months to complete.
A tetanus booster is not a bad idea if you haven't had one in the last decade. Rabies is also good to have if you are going to be out in the countryside.
It is unlikely that you will find work as a swim teacher (unless working for 50-100 thb/hr over your weekend is in your plan). You'd make 5-10x that much as an "English" teacher (on the side).
As to the "where to focus your direction"... land... travel around for a while and get a feel for the place.
If you are desperate for work - (as in don't have enough savings to boot around the country for a month or two to get an idea of where you might like to be) .... then stay in BKK for your first term. It will be easy to find work and support yourself as you figure out how things work here. Then you will be ready in May to find what you want.

You were right in your first selection. You should be able to land a job around Chiang Mai. A good place to look is the Ajarn teaching website. You're salary will range from 30000 to 40000. In Chiang Mai most likely 30000. A lot of people want to work in Chiang Mai, so the salaries are likely to be less than Bangkok.

No, they don't require shots in Thailand. Although if you get a job in central Thailand you may be getting Rabies shots. The dogs up north are usually not a problem. Maybe the Lanna Thais get rid of them.

searching for someone that needs swim lessons would be like looking for a needle in a haystack. |
