Err on the side of caution.
July and August are not application processing time. The school (FAO) wants to be fully staffed by 2nd week July.
It's my impression that they go with whoever they've got, rather than hang on for the better qualified person who is slow to react.
Carpe Diem. As another poster has said, China is a crap shoot when you get to the last details.
Be as diligent as you can but secure the position. |

Just one further point, as I've got a thing recently about the nickle and diming on airfares that's occurring.
Does the RMB6000 mentioned in your contract, cover your outbound?
If it does, you've gotten a good deal as they are buying your home bound ticket. |

Some of the Europeans and North Americans at my school have been complaining about the airfare being cut from a round trip ticket or cash equivalent every year to a flat 7,000 citing they'll now be 2 or 3,000rmb each time they fly home (doesn't bother me as to Aust. my flights still generally come in under this)...a couple of them even went right up the food chain to the Vice Dean to complain who told them that there are "orders" from the big bosses in Nanjing for public schools and universities to cut the foreign teacher budget. Whether this is true, or just buck passing I'm not sure, but I've certainly noticed more nickel and diming in my new contract than before....unlimited drinking water has been cut to "4 buckets" per month, maximum of 6 tons of tap water to be used per month (unlimited before), they used to pay an allowance if you were hospitalized - now gone....etc...there were loads of little things in there which while they may save them a few bucks here and there will mean they're having to now fork out multiple recruiter fees every semester. "Penny-wise, pound-foolish" is the expression I think. |

They go into that much detail about water consumption?! That's a special kind of crazy. I actually didn't go through a recruiter for this gig, so maybe they'll cut me some slack (ha!). Here's what my contract says about airfare:
3.1 The College will provide ONE return flight ticket from one of the US airports to Chengdu in economy class (preferably, the College reimburses the coming ticket [equivalent up to no more than CNY 6,000], and buys the return ticket.). Unless in extraordinary circumstances, holiday travel expenses will not be covered by the College. |

Sorry, I misread 3.1 first time through.
Still a little confused about one way and return tickets mentioned.
When you get to book you may want to quote the one way and return ticket costs to the school.
They may not be on hand to answer come holiday time though.
Problem with group input on airfare issues is that they vary widely depending on point of origin, route/competition and season. |

Well, nightmare scenario is coming true. Please read the email I woke up to this morning and give me some advice...my inclination is to find another school/province. I'm so pissed right now, look at this BS:
Hi Mr.
How are you? We have received your package and we go to Sichuan International Travelling Hygiene Center today, but unfortunately your physical examination reports does not meet their requirements, because they said you did the physical examination in a private clinic, which they will not accept that as they require the reports from state owned hospital or governmental hospital ( Yanfei and I do not know how to distinguish private and state owned hospital) and some of your documents (ECG and blood test) do not have hospital's stamp on it. We tried very hard to talk to them to see if there is a solution to this situation, however now the only way is you need to do the physical examination in a governmental hospital or a state owned hospital and please have all the original documents are signed by the doctors and have hospital's stamp on it.Moreover, they now have a very new requirement that is the photo which attached on the health form need the hospital's stamp too.
They have also said that if you only can do examination in private hospital, all the testing reports are needed to be notarized by the local notary office. (doctor's signature and hospital's stamp are required likewise)
We are very sorry about all the troubles and inconvenience. We did not expect that too and all that things may likely affect your coming in september. We are very understanding that if you are upset about it.
Please let us know your decision.
Best Wishes! |

Apart from the emergency dept I don't know of any Western country where front line medicine is done by hospitals.
I get the impression is is a pretty backwoods situation where they may not be aware of the free market.
If you have time, look elsewhere, but I think a trip back to your clinic is in order. Maybe a copy of some accreditation would help ditto the blood test lab and radiology provider.
I would be totally pissed like you. |

| It sounds like there may have been a new person at the local medical centre where they do the medicals for foreigners. It's the place you would have to go to have the medical redone on arrival anyway. It's hard to see why they are being so picky when they are only going to repeat most, if not all of the tests themselves anyway. However, this is China, and senseless bureaucracy is the name of the game. Someone has made a mistake I think, which means you have about 0% chance of them admitting it and backing down. I would cut my losses, tell them you can't comply because that's not how it's done in your country, and apply for another job. It's a bummer, but it should also help prepare you for life in China. |

Why did they do this?
This might be a provincial variation but the only people who need to see the health form are SAFEA, when they look at it along with all of your other documents before issuing a Work Permit.
There should be no need to take your medical form to the Travel and Quarantine Hospital (unless, in Sichuan, there is a rule that it has to get stamped by doctor there before it's admissible to SAFEA).
I see their requirement for stamps (it says that on the form) but the State/Private hospital distinction is new to me and one which the recipient of the form has no way of knowing.
In short, I am not really sure why this is an issue and I suspect that the FAO might not really know what they are doing. |

| Why not just get the medical exam in China? Am I missing something? Is there a reason why you can't or don't want to? |

I got a couple copies, with all the stamps and signatures. So, when I went from one province to another, I just gave them the other one. I saved having to go to the hospital twice.
You could go to Sichuan, get multiple copies and do the same, saving money later on. |

| On my most recent one I just went to some local med clinic in Texas. I got them to take their address stamp and just stamp all over everything. It was nothing more than an office stamp with name/address. Seemed silly but they do love stamps here. Wasn't anything official at all but it did the trick. |
