Konichiwa.
It's Konnichiwa btw. Many westerners make the mistake of pronouncing it ko ni chi wa when there is an extra letter:

KON-NI-CHI-WA not KO-NI-CHI-WA Smile
NihonBound: Don't worry if this makes no sense. He's talking about consonant length, which is a concept you don't encounter in languages like English.

They're still going to understand, either way. Like how "suimasen" and "sumimasen" both mean the same thing.

Anpanman. I'm totally serious. Watch them over, and over, and over again. You'll pick up new language every time.

You mean this right?

If he wants to romanise it as konichiwa, i don't see a problem. IT could be argued that it's actually kon nichi ha if you want to be picky. Anyhoo, how often do you hear a Japanese person use the full "konnichiwa" anyway? It's more like ~chwa.

Sure Smile

I'm surprised my comment has caused all this! I just wanted to point it out because it's one of the most basic words in Japanese and I think people in the west seem to think it's pronounced konichiwa. Of course everyone will understand you and some people especially men seem to almost slur konnichiwa as konchiwa, but as far as I know this ellipsis is not so appropriate for women in the Japanese language (?). Anyway, my point is that I think it's good to get the basics right.

One thing is romanising it konichiwa and another thing is pronouncing it incorrectly and I would imagine logically someone who spells it konichiwa would assume it's pronounced like that. However, to be honest I have very little desire in having a discussion about such an unimportant topic all I wanted to do was help the OP Very Happy

The best way to cheat at Japanese is to just say "masu" when you walk past someone. Half the time that's all they say at my school, be it "ohayou gozaimasu", "onegai shimasu", "shitsure shimasu", etc.
